David Khalaf was born in Orange County, California. He studied journalism and creative writing at the University of Southern California, and wrote his first full novel, a futuristic social satire, right out of college. It's still sitting on a shelf somewhere. Don't go looking for it.

David's award-winning historical fantasy adventure series, The Burdens Adventure Series, grew out of David's interest in Los Angeles history and Hollywood during the Golden Age of film.

After nearly twenty years in Los Angeles, he came to know the city well, mostly after getting lost. He still gets lost sometimes.

I think the one piece of advice I would carry into the new year is to BE AUTHENTIC -- both in my writing and in my life. Good writing starts with authentic characters, people we can believe and relate to. These characters may do extraordinary things, but they are rooted in an authenticity that touches something universal.

It's a good mantra to carry into my personal life as well. As much as I want to impress others and put my best foot forward, what people really want is someone authentic. When people see my wounds, my flaws, and my scars, they can better relate to me. They can trust me more because they can see that I'm not putting up a perfect facade.

My need for perfection, both in writing and in life, is my biggest challenge to being authentic. My goal for the coming year is to strive to be more imperfect.(less)

“The queer Christian community is moving past apologetics, beyond having to justify our sexuality to the church or defend our faith to our secular LGBTQ friends. For so long our community has been focused on the issue of acceptance that we have, perhaps, become shortsighted about what lies beyond it. That is what we seek to explore in this book; lives and relationships as they break free from a history of hostility and emerge into an era of acceptance.”
David Khalaf, Modern Kinship: A Queer Guide to Christian Marriage

“The lesson for all of us is this: your authority to speak into someone's life is directly proportional to your investment in the relationship.”
David Khalaf, Modern Kinship: A Queer Guide to Christian Marriage

“What many people fail to understand is that coming out doesn't happen all at once. There is no gay correlation to a bar mitzvah or confirmation, in which you read the sacred texts of Oscar Wilde in front of friends and family and then receive a rainbow flag from Ellen DeGeneres, who drapes it about your shoulders as a disco band strikes up "I'm Coming Out.”
