Review: Mark Lawrence's 'Prince of Thorns'
4/5 stars Screaming women, dual storylines, masterful world-building and some dubious depictions of violence in 'Prince of Thorns'. I started reading 'Prince of Thorns' last year, and stopped - repulsed by the depiction of such extreme violence coming from such a young protagonist: and the casual, offhand descriptions of violence against women. Particularly in the opening scenes (trigger warning) where two sisters are gang-raped and left to be burnt alive. I braced myself, and picked up

Are You Too Old to Read YA?
I’ve always read ahead of my age, as a lot of voracious readers do, I think. When I was nine, I was reading about fifteen year-olds. When I was thirteen, I was reading about sixteen year olds. Then, when I was seventeen, I was reading about seventeen year olds. When I was eighteen, I was reading about … seventeen year olds … Twenty? Seventeen year olds. Twenty two? Seventeen year olds. You get the picture. Obviously, there isn’t anything wrong with reading about younger protagonists. I[image error]
