Pain is Not Gain

Today a fitness participant broke my heart.

She came to me in tears, telling me she was in pain. One of the fitness teachers had pushed her too hard, into positions she couldn’t do because of her back injuries and now all she felt was pain. She couldn’t get out of bed without crying.

Maybe it’s my training but I work with people who have injuries, disabilities, and those who have been told by their doctors, “If you don’t start working out, things will get worse.” If you are just starting out after years of sitting on a coach you should not be forced into a twenty-something workout session.

I never understood why fitness instructors and personal trainers don’t listen to their participants. If you are in so much pain the next day you can’t walk, you need to find another trainer.

We are not on a top-rated weight loss show, this is real life, and we are everyday people trying to start taking care of ourselves. You should never be saying “ouch” in a fitness workout, if you are pushing through pain you are only injuring yourself further. I’m not talking about being sore, I’m talking about pain. Soreness is good, it means you are building muscles. Pain and tears are bad, it means you are injuring yourself.

You are your own teachers, personal trainers and fitness instructors are there as guides. You know your limitations, what you can and cannot do. A great fitness teacher will listen to your needs, there are modifications for almost every workout move. Ask for them if something hurts and you need to try something different. If the instructor is not listening to you and pushing you too hard try to find another instructor. Remember you are paying them to help you, not the other way around. I know I’m not the coach for everyone but I will always take feedback from my participants and try to incorporate what they need in my classes and trainings.

If you have been out of a healthy life style for years, it will take time to get back into health. Be patient with yourself.

Find a coach that will work with you on your level and help you develop healthy habits.

My Start in Fitness

So today in class I had a student who is studying fitness for school. She happened to come to my yoga morning class.

She asked the question, “What advice would you give to a student who is trying to become a fitness professional?”

I was surprised by this question, after all, I never thought that I would become a fitness instructor.

I was a dancer since I was little and I used to love dance but I’ve had my heart broken a few times in the process. So, like anything else in our life, if you get hurt by something you don’t want do it anymore. My mom has been teaching fitness for years and she wanted me to take over some of her classes when she was ready to move up to the cabin in the mountains full time. I was hesitant at first, not sure of my own abilities or if I was going to get burned again.

When the opportunity came up to become a fitness instructor I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. But now I share that love with all my students.

I answered her question, “Make class and training fun.”
Workouts are hard enough on their own, as a coach we don’t need to make it any worse. You have to get people motivated to come back to something they enjoy.

I wouldn’t give up teaching fitness for the world. Thank you, mom, for helping me get started in a job I actually love. And not very many people can say that.

November kicks off the holiday season with high expectations for a cozy and festive time of year. However, for many this time of year is tinged with sadness, anxiety, or depression. Certainly, major depression or a severe anxiety disorder benefits most from professional help. But what about those who just feel lost or overwhelmed or down at this time of year? Research (and common sense) suggests that one aspect of the Thanksgiving season can actually lift the spirits, and it’s built right into the holiday — expressing gratitude.

The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness (depending on the context). In some ways gratitude encompasses all of these meanings. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually…

Defeating Your Self-Bully by Renee Hines is certainly food for thought. How many of us have been bullied, or seen it happen to friends and family? Our first reaction to bullying in some form is anger towards the bully. But being a self bully? Certainly not! Well, yes, you can be the worst bully you will ever encounter and this insightful book leads you through a thought provoking journey of self discovery. How often do you say “I am such an idiot!” and become angry at yourself, berate yourself for a silly mistake, or brood over something you can’t change? You are actually your own worst enemy. Think about all the negative input and feedback you give yourself every day. Can it be considered bullying? Well, would you say that to a friend or loved one? No, but it’s okay to say it to yourself. This book goes much deeper than the power of positive thought. It looks into the way you think about yourself, how you talk to yourself, and the effect this can have on your life. There are useful exercises to follow, and reference materials to assist you in becoming a happier person!

In Defeating Your Self-Bully by Renee Hines, I discovered I am a true self bully. It is surprising that we do this to ourselves. We don’t like bullies, we avoid them. How do we avoid ourselves? In Defeating Your Self-Bully, Renee Hines gives us some wonderful insight into how she changed her life by thinking about herself and speaking to herself differently. Surprisingly, this book showed me words that I use every day, and presented them to me in a totally new light. I was forced to rethink my life and thought patterns, and came to some surprising conclusions! I am on my way to becoming a happier person, and to celebrate that, this book is going to be on my Christmas list for each and every member of my family and all my friends! Yes, this change will take time, but I am ready to face the challenge! Are you? Take the first step and start reading this book now!
