Mitchell Hadley writes fiction that resists easy labels, including postmodern political drama (The Collaborator), existential mystery (The Car), and The Book of Revelations (June 16, 2026). If you're writing non-fiction, try your hand at a short story. Just keep the words flowing, and eventually your creativity will turn you back toward what you were working on, and you'll be able to get past that block.(less)

It doesn't matter if it's good or bad, or if you're writing for others or just for yourself. Write, and keep writing. Write about what you know, and immerse yourself in things that interest you until you know more about them, and then write about them, too.

Most important, "listen" to the books you read. Don't just read them, listen to how the words are formed on the page, how they sound to your inner ear, how the paragraphs are structured. Don't copy how other authors sound, but learn about what sounds good to you and why, and fine-tune that ability until you can do it with your own writing. A writer is similar to an architect in that they're both involved in constructing things, so think of yourself as not just writing, but constructing, a story.(less)
