My YA Book Deal!

Hi all! It feels like a long time coming, but earlier this month I was finally able to announce the BEST news - my 2-book deal with Tor Teen!

The first book is currently titled, The Sound & the Stone, and will release in Winter 2020. It follows play-sisters, Tavia and Effie, as they grapple with their supernatural identities (literally magical Black girls, yeessss), teendom (can you say failed romances?), and misogynoir (it's time to talk about the hate directed at Black girls) in Portland. There are SO many reasons I adore this story, not the least of which is my adoration, appreciation of, and dependence on the wonder that is Black sisterhood. In a way, S&S is an ode to that unique, necessary, life-affirming, sometimes saving and often avenging power.

Want a little aesthetic sneak peek??

(Yes, there's a gargoyle!)

I cannot wait to share this book, and even though 2020 feels SO far away, I know it's going to go by so fast! Add The Sound & the Stone to your TBR, find me on Twitter, and feel free to ask questions!!

xx

MEM is an Indies Introduce pick!!

Twice a year, the American Booksellers Association convenes two panels - one for adult debuts, another for childrens debuts - and selects their top 10 debuts for each market.

MEM made it onto their Winter/Spring 2018 Adult list, and I could not be happier! This is such an honor and I'm so honored! I can't wait to see what happens next. xx

Changes for LLoA

After much consideration, I've decided to part ways with my intended publisher, and THE LAST LIFE OF AVRILIS will therefore not debut this September.

I know! While of course I would love to have shared this novel (which I ADORE) with you in the coming months, I am pleased with my decision and with the wonderful support of my agent, Mark Gottlieb.

I will of course let you know when LLoA *will* be available, and SO look forward to sharing it with the world! <3

Salon article shows LLoA some love!

Hey all!

Just dropping by to share an article written by the formidable Paula Young Lee for Salon.com, continuing the conversation begun by #OscarsSoWhite and further prompted by the unfortunate use of Asian children as a prop in a joke during the broadcast. The article is a call to action and mentions quite a few novels that are blockbuster fodder - and THE LAST LIFE OF AVRILIS is one of them!

Of course, I couldn't agree more! Take a look at the article and then check out two members of my dream cast!

In Which I Give You All The Links

Hi, all!

As 2016 (aka The Year I Debut) approaches, I am so excited share my thoughts and preparations with you! Recently, on my personal blog, I've been talking about: my current obsession with imagining narrators for my novel, should it ever be an audio book; my love of secondary characters in LLoA (my nickname for The Last Life of Avrilis); and the fact that I have to relearn how to write books every time I write a book!

(Those are all linked - have a look see!)

There's so many things over which to obsess when the year of publication approaches! And I have not disappointed. It's not my fault! Social media gives one so many platforms on which to faint and daydream and obsess.

Like so.

Pinterest, for instance, allows me to stare obsessively lovingly into the world of LLoA! ::stares::

Twitter lets me to expose how well I'm handling my curiosity about LLoA's future cover!

And my Facebook author page is where it's totally acceptable to foist some of my favorite covers on you!

Secret: I may be really excited to find out about LLoA's cover!

So, I hope you'll join me in this crazy, exciting adventure leading up to my debut! See you here and elsewhere around the interwebs!
