Interview with Christina Britton, Author of A Match Made in London

A Match Made in London
by Christina Britton
Genre: Historical Romance

Miss Rosalind Merriweather’s life has been one of hardship and servitude since her late sister’s ruination. Now a paid companion, her latest post brings her to London to watch over the daughter of a social climbing harridan. She vows to protect her charge―and her own heart―from rakes and libertines, the very type of man who destroyed her sister. This vow proves difficult when Sir Tristan Crosby, the epitome of all she despises, begins to show attention to the girl.

Tristan has spent decades perfecting his easygoing, charming persona to hide the damage done by years of abuse by his father. Finding he has a talent for matchmaking, he fills some of the emptiness inside him by helping the overlooked, shy women of London find true love. However, the latest young woman has a watchdog of a companion who seems to see beyond his careful façade to the flawed, uncertain soul he strives to hide from the world. Even worse, she affects him in ways no woman ever has.

But he will not give up his matchmaking, even for one such as her. What he does not expect is for Rosalind to be fired from her position because of it―nor that she will immediately find a position in his own household. When these two headstrong adversaries meet under one roof, will their attraction to one another lead to heartbreak, or have these two passionate souls finally met their match?

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?

Harry Potter! I swear, every time I read through those books I am absolutely captivated, transported to this magical, fictional place. And those books are so beloved. To be able to write something that touches people to that degree would be amazing.

What makes this particular genre you are involved in so special?

The Regency era has an elegance and refinement to it, but also a fun naughtiness. It’s so unlike the  modern world, yet can carry many modern sensibilities. I’ve been drawn to it for so many years, I can’t even imagine writing anything else.

How important is research to you when writing a book?

Incredibly important, though it can be daunting to get every single detail absolutely spot on. There’s a balance in historical romance, between the fantasy of it all and the realism. It’s that balance, giving a little in each direction, that makes the genre so captivating. But you still have to respect the time period, and especially the readers who love it.

What works best for you: Typewriters, fountain pen, dictate, computer or longhand?

I start my books by fleshing them out with gel pens and spiral notebooks. Once I get my main characters and the central conflict fleshed out, I move to computer. Most of the actual writing is done straight to computer, though when I hit a roadblock in the story I work it out long hand.

When did it dawn upon you that you wanted to be a writer?/What inspires you

to write?

I knew I wanted to write not long after I bought my first romance novel when I was just thirteen years old. I remember that trip to Waldenbooks vividly, and I still have the book. I was so transported, so inspired, I had to try my hand at it. I don’t remember ever thinking I could do it better. I just wanted to do it, too. It was a dream for so many years, one of those things you see as unattainable but still like to turn over in your head every now and then. It wasn’t until my youngest started school, though, that I actually became serious about it. I was selling my paintings at the time, and was at a cross roads: either work toward becoming a children’s book illustrator, or write. I came across a letter from my late grandfather just then, in which he had written he couldn’t wait for me to become a published author. That set my course then and there.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I love reading. The ones I gravitate toward are other historical romance authors, such as Julia Quinn, Tessa Dare, and Sarah MacLean, among (many) others. When I’m actively writing I have to read in my subgenre, otherwise the flavor of my writing is off. I just can’t get the right historical feel. When I’m editing I’ll read contemporaries, especially Adriana Anders. I also adore anything by Courtney Milan or Alyssa Cole, both in contemporary and historical romance.

Christina Britton developed a passion for writing romance novels shortly after buying her first at the tender age of thirteen. Though for several years she turned to art and put brush instead of pen to paper, she has returned to her first love and is now writing full time. She spends her days dreaming of corsets and cravats and noblemen with tortured souls.

She lives with her husband and two children in the San Francisco Bay Area. A member of Romance Writers of America, she also belongs to her local chapter, Silicon Valley RWA, and is a 2017 RWA® Golden Heart® winner. Her debut novel, With Love in Sight, was released by Diversion Books in early 2018.

My careers in public relations in and around the

passion for writing, not to mention gave me a treasure trove for
story lines.

I write women’s fiction; contemporary romance (as

ever evolving. I am fortunate enough that writing (and marketing of
said product(s)) is my full-time job, although I always have one or
two other projects going at the same time.

I now live in a suburb of Atlanta. Some of my other interests include photography,

GUEST POST

What the characters have to say:

Auckland, New Zealand, 1884

Lady Ermintrude

You don’t mind if I whisper, do you? Hastings Manor is full of ears, and people’s best pastime is gossip. Thank goodness I’m not that type of lady. But I have to speak my mind.

My niece Isabel, the current Duchess of Sussex, has gone mad. She’s accommodating, here in Hastings Manor, street urchins. Street urchins! From Auckland’s rookery!

Good gracious, I need a sherry. These street urchins don’t even have decent names and the youngest one, called Trigger—ptf!—spat on his teaspoon to clean it. The older, the one called Murk, I think he’s a thief or a murderer. Apparently, he can turn himself invisible. Invisible! So inappropriate.

Those dark eyes mean trouble, mark my word, but Isabel thinks he’s charming. Poppycock, I say. I’m sure she’d like to dirty-puzzle with him. Oh, the horror. But does she listen to me? No one is listening to me anymore. A bunch of rebels they are.  Now, where’s my sherry?

I’m an entomologist and a soil biologist, which is a fancy way to say that I dig in the dirt, looking for bugs. Nature and books have always been my passion. I was a kid when I read The Lord Of The Ring and fell in love with fantasy novels.
When I discovered cosy mystery and crime novel, I fell in love with Hercules Poirot and Sherlock Holmes. Then I grew up and . . . Nah, I’m joking. I didn’t grow up. Don’t grow up, folks! It’s a trap.
PS I hate gardening. There, I said it. Sorry fellow Kiwis.

Interview with Author Linda Stratmann

I am so excited to be talking with author Linda Stratmann today! She is the author of the lovely Mina Scarletti mysteries, which I read through at lightning speed and reviewed the first one here

Introduce yourself and give a little information about how you became a writer.

I was always destined to be a writer – I started scribbling little poems when I was six!  But I never received any encouragement or advice – it was not seen as a viable ambition. I have been a chemist’s dispenser and a civil servant, but the scribbling always went on in the background. I have always loved history – my mother was a great history enthusiast – and we used to watch true crime programmes on the television. I started collecting books on crime when I was eighteen.

Many years later I wrote articles about crime for a friend’s amateur magazine, and this led to my first serious project, a book about the 1886 Adelaide Bartlett chloroform murder case, which took me three years to research and write in my spare time and resulted in my deep fascination for the nineteenth century. Although I didn’t find a publisher for that book, I was commissioned to write a history of chloroform, which was published in 2003. I was commissioned for a number of non-fiction crime books, and then I decided to write the sort of Victorian crime fiction mysteries I wanted to read.
How did the Mina Scarletti Mysteries come about?

I was writing the Frances Doughty mysteries about a Victorian lady sleuth, but felt I wanted to do something a little different. One day as I was walking along the street it just popped into my head – an investigator who debunks fraudulent mediums. The whole area of Victorian spiritualism is absolutely fascinating, and the 1870s was such a free-for-all as there was no real critical investigation, and charlatans could make a lot of money out of the bereaved.
Mina is such a unique character. Can you tell me a bit more about how and why you developed her this way?

I wanted a character who was not going to pushed into the typical roles of marriage and motherhood. Mina is small and frail. She has scoliosis – a twisted spine – and has been advised not to marry. In creating her I was inspired by two people, a lady I knew when I was a child, and also Fanny Maclean a murder victim, who had scoliosis. In 1879 she was romanced by a scoundrel who persuaded her to sign over her property to him and then he killed her. It demonstrated how vulnerable a disabled woman with property could be in the Victorian marriage market. In creating Mina I wanted to develop a character who could overcome her difficulties from sheer determination and force of will.
Your books are unique in the historical/cozy mystery genres in that there is no murder to solve. All of the books seem to focus on just the spiritualism at the time. Why did you decide to write outside the norm in this way?

There are other crimes to explore, such as fraud and extortion, which can be more interesting than murder, because of the planning and deception involved. I have always been fascinated by how people think and what they believe and have spent a number of years delving into the history of spiritualism and the psychology of belief. But there are some murders, or suspected murders in the series – in An Unquiet Ghost Mina looks into a twenty-year-old murder case. And I do have plans for a future Mina book with a murder in it.
What can we expect from you in the near future?

The fourth Mina book, The Ghost of Hollow House should be out in the next few weeks. Mina is asked to advise some newlyweds about a haunted mansion. Look out for all sorts of spooky mayhem, and the re-appearance of an old enemy.

I am working on two projects at present, one fiction, one non-fiction. I am honoured to have been asked to edit a volume in the new Notable British Trials series being published in the traditional format by Mango Books. My subject is the horrific murder of Patrick O’Connor by Frederick and Maria Manning in 1849. I am also writing the fifth Mina book, His Father’s Ghost in which I have set fresh challenges for my diminutive heroine.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Did you learn anything during the writing of The Invisible Heiress?

Where do I start? Oh, yes. I learned the more I write the harder it is, the more I care about the finished product. I’ve been lucky to work with exceptional teachers, writers and editors. So I can’t fool myself anymore. I know what’s good and what sucks. I learned every sentence matters. I learned a lot about what I believe, what my definition of family is, and the strength of the mother/child bond. I believe it was Joan Didion who said she writes to find out what she thinks. That was definitely true for me with this novel. Everything I believe is there, on the page.

What is your favorite part of this book and why?

Two favorites. First, I’d have to say the humor. It’s definitely irreverent and even inappropriate but it makes the story more unique. Some of the events are tragic yet the humor makes them more bearable, more relatable. The second is the rage. It was a lot of fun to write a character who is so enraged. Preston has no filter. She says what she wants, when she wants, to whomever she wants. She spares no one her wrath. It was freeing to give Preston life, an angry, spoiled, often hilarious one. It was also fun to write someone as manipulative and focused as Isabel. She does whatever it takes to get her way. No extreme is too extreme. I loved her even though she’s villainous.

Kathleen O’Donnell is a wife, mom, grandmother and a recovering blogger.

She currently lives in Nevada with her husband. She is a two time

Book of the Year finalist for her debut novel The Last Day for Rob

Rhino. You can find short stories and blog posts on her website.

The Men of The Lioness of Egypt

I had so much fun bringing the world of The Lioness of Egypt to life with my awesome co-author Alice Wilde. One of the best parts was finding men to serve as inspiration for the three lion kings. Here are the three gorgeous men I had in mind when writing The Lioness of Egypt.

King Zakai – Mike Colter

The definition of tall, dark, and handsome, Mike Colter (whom you might know as Marvel’s Luke Cage) would be the perfect person to play King Zakai of the Anwe people. Zakai is the oldest of the three lion kings. He is the most mature and a natural leader. He has a deep, commanding voice, but he isn’t afraid to step aside when a woman needs to take the lead.

King Oringo – Michael B. Jordan

Young and fierce, Michael B. Jordan (Kilmonger from Black Panther) is the perfect King Oringo of Dakari. Oringo is young, angry, and tatted up. He has to prove himself to everyone and will commit unspeakable acts to do so. He needs someone to believe in him and help him make better choices.

King Saleem – Sheikh Hamdan

Not an actor, but the real-life crown prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan is the perfect stand-in for King Saleem. Saleem is a scholar who loves poetry and philosophical discussions. As his father’s third son, he never thought he would be king and isn’t sure how to be one. He needs someone who knows how to rule to show him how to be the best king for his people.

Wow. Anyone else in here getting hot? After you read The Lioness of Egypt, you’ll have to tell me which lion king you love the most

Generating Ideas – Guest Post by Katharine E. Wibell, Author of The Incarn Saga

Issaura’s Claws
The Incarn Saga Book 1
by Katharine E. Wibell
Genre: YA Fantasy

“According to legend, when the world was young, the goddess Issaura appeared among men. Those who treated her with kindness received the gift of the gods—the ability to transform into an animal form. This was a great honor but one that separated this race from other humans. Before Issaura departed the mortal realm, she promised to return if her people were ever at the point of destruction.

“Now a threat is rising from a land across the mists of the ocean, a threat that will push this race to the brink of extinction. Responding to the call to war, seventeen-year-old Lluava heads off to find her destiny, one that will carve her name in history.”

The Kingdom of Elysia consists of two races: the dominant race of humans and the native race of Theriomorphs who can shift into animal form. Although law dictates equal treatment, they neither like nor trust each other. Now brutal and ruthless Raiders are approaching; there is only one chance to defeat them. An army must be raised and trained. An army where each human will be paired with a Theriomorph partner. An army that must fight as one to defeat their common enemy.

Women are not warriors. However, Lluava is not like other women – human or Theriomorph. Her animal form is a magnificent beast whose power and fury she must learn to control. Although Lluava endures intense physical training and strives to overcome the doubts of the male recruits, she faces an unexpected adversary in the commanding general who seeks to break both her spirit and her body.

At the paring ceremony, Lluava is humbled when presented with a unique and ancient weapon. Yet she becomes distraught and angry when her human partner is revealed. If they fail to trust each other, the consequences will be devastating. Death and destruction are on the horizon and time is running out.

The Incarn Saga is a young adult fantasy series inspired by ancient myths, filled with fast-paced action and adventure, and enriched by an understanding of animal behavior that defines the shape-shifting Theriomorphs.

GUEST POST

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

A number of personal experiences inspired me to write Issaura’s Claws and The Incarn Saga series. In college, I pursued a degree in animal psychology, aka animal behavior, in addition to pursuing a degree in art. I had always wanted to understand the sounds and body language of animals. In that same vein, I become a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for the state of Georgia and worked directly with wild animals. Immediately after college, I apprenticed with a dog trainer. That was followed by an internship at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans.

As a result of these experiences, I envisioned a race of people known as Theriomorphs that can transform into animal forms. Even when Theriomorphs are in human form, various animal characteristics, both physical and psychological, are evident. For example, Yamir, a ruddy-skinned youth who spikes his hair and seems to get stuck in uncomfortable situations, has an animal form of a porcupine. The protagonist, Lluava, has a dual form of a white tigress. Physically, she has platinum blond hair yet very black eyebrows. She is fierce, brave, strong, and more than a little hot-tempered.

The second major inspiration is my ongoing study of the Vikings. Being of Swedish descent, I am drawn to this historical people and enjoy researching Viking history, culture, weapons and warfare, even common misconceptions. The more I learn, the more I appreciate and respect their often unacknowledged influence on the world. As a result, certain traits of the villainous Raiders who threaten to destroy the kingdom of Elysia are drawn from the Vikings.

The third important influence is mythology. As long as I can remember, I have collected anthologies of world legends and myths as well as encyclopedias of beasts and beings. A minor theme in Issaura’s Claws compares the human race’s monotheistic beliefs with the Theriomorph race’s polytheism. Ancient Egyptian religion along with the Greco-Roman pantheon inspired both my creation of the twelve Theriomorph gods and goddesses and their relationships with one another.

Finally, I feel strongly about unwarranted prejudice toward those different from oneself. Throughout the series, I point out how racism, religious persecution, and sexism affect the relationships between the ruling human race and Theriomorph society. In Issaura’s Claws, Raiders attack the kingdom. If both humans and Theriomorphs cannot overcome their differences, learn to trust each other and work together, they will surely succumb to their shared enemy.

In the following books, these influences and issues still prevail. The dynamic of the later novels do take a darker turn and become more violent and gritty. Throughout the series, readers will clearly see how animals, Vikings, mythology, and of course the uphill battles against prejudice still take predominant roles.

Ullr’s Fangs
The Incarn Saga Book 2

“According to legend, when the world was young, two gods of war — one male, one female — were destined for each other. Yet Ullr, forever unfaithful, lost the love of Issaura, his true match, and was forsworn. His violent anger and bitter rage grew and intensified, poisoning all creation and humanity.

Now that the Raiders’ long ships have faded from sight, the kingdom of Elysia is beginning to recover from the summer’s war with the brutal invaders from across the sea. Yet darker forces have taken root, forces that can alter the future of the land and its people in unthinkable ways. Seventeen-year-old Lluava must discover the means to prevent her world from collapsing. But in doing so, will she succumb to that darkness?”

Goodreads * Amazon

Crocotta’s Hackles
The Incarn Saga Book 3

“According to legend, when the world was young, Crocotta, Queen of the Gods, discovered her mate’s faithlessness. She vowed to prevent future threats to all matrimonial pacts henceforward, but for her it was too late. The child born from the illicit coupling was a warrior goddess—one whom Crocotta would seek to destroy throughout eternity.

Now that the Raiders’ elite army is threatening the kingdom of Elysia’s northern borders, seventeen-year-old Lluava must leave the familiarity and safety of her native land to venture into the wilderness. Her mission is to discover others like her who will come to Elysia’s aid; her hope is to unravel the secrets behind what it means to be Incarn. But what she finds could destroy everything.”

Lluava’s story continues in Crocotta’s Hackles, the third book in The Incarn Saga’s award-winning new-adult series.

Katharine Wibell’s lifelong interest in mythology includes epic poetry like the Odyssey, Ramayana, Beowulf, and the Nibelungenlied. In addition, she is interested in all things animal whether training dogs, apprenticing at a children’s zoo, or caring for injured animals as a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. After receiving degrees from Mercer University in both art and psychology with an emphasis in animal behavior, Wibell moved to New Orleans with her dog, Alli, to kick start her career as an artist and a writer. Her first literary works blend her knowledge of the animal world with the world of high fantasy.
