I am reading about life on various 17th and 18th century Virginia tobacco plantations as well as the customs, government and court proceedings. They are scholarly works and include the plantation diary of Landon Carter "Uneasy Kingdom" by Rhys Isaac; Twice Condemned - Slaves and the Criminal Laws of Virginia, 1705 - 1865 by Philip J. Schwarz; Foul Means - The Formation of Slave Society in Virginia, 1660- 1740 by Anthony S. Parent, Jr.; Sir William Berkeley and the Forging of Colonial Virginia and The Old Dominion in the Seventeenth Century both by Warren Billings. I am also listening to the audio book of Colson Whitehead's "The Underground Railroad".(less)
