Remembrance is a form of resistance.

There is a particular grief in knowing a history exists, that people lived it, carried it, passed it down in family stories and silences, and then watching it disappear from the written record.

Not because it wasn’t significant. Because no one with a pen decided it was worth telling. Or because those telling our stories, aren’t from our communities.

“Secrets always find a way to come to light”
Shereen Malherbe, Jasmine Falling

“Jasmine shook her head. She had forgotten about the tales of the Jinn that her father warned her about. Now, being here the memories were returning like a slow and purposeful
spider. With its long, black legs the nightmares would creep into her mind each time she closed her eyes. Then, she would see through the creature’s murky eyes. She would see the carcass of a deer as it lay in the glistening white. She would watch the hyena tearing at its sweated flesh, blood seeping into the snow forming warm pools of death around her feet. And in that moment, the deer shifted. It shifted into the shape of a young boy.”
Shereen Malherbe, Jasmine Falling

“We are hidden here far above the sea, but the angels move the wind across the world, they rescue those who call to Allah on their desert journeys when they are about to be overcome by a murderous sword. These are stories that we tell to remind you. You have inherited much, not just the stories of your past. There is a future with you. Do not lose hope, Children of Palestine. We are not alone, Children of Palestine. We are soldiers of this land and this is where we belong.”
Shereen Malherbe, The Land Beneath the Light
