Extract from Stop the World: 'I felt sick, my stomach churning. I pictured my body lying by the side of the road, my skull bashed in, like one of those horror movies I was too scared to watch where the young girl is stalked and murdered by a crazed nutcase. I shuddered. I was nearly home, but this was Modoc County, desolate landscape that rolled on forever with only the occasional ranch house dotted around. That girl wasn’t going to be me. I would escape this psycho.
Accelerating, I kept picking up speed, exhaling a long jittery sigh when I managed to create some distance – until he revved his engine like a madman, racing forwards and swerved in front of me.
“You crazy fucker,” I screamed as I tried to slam on the brakes – but my wheels locked, my car veering from left to right, and I spun around and hit a tree.
It all happened so fast. There was a loud crashing noise and I was propelled forward into the windshield.
Tiny splinters fell around me like hailstones and the stench of fumes seeped into my nose and throat, choking me until I wanted to vomit.
I don’t recall much else as I drifted in and out of consciousness, except the sound of sirens and a fireman cutting through my car roof to get me out.
Everything felt hazy, dreamlike.
Was that really me with warm liquid seeping down my face surrounded by loud voices and cop cars?
I wasn’t sure.
Then everything went black.'
