Believe in Jesus

Many churches preach, and people believe that all we have to do for a ticket-in is to believe in Jesus. If this arrangement was made between you and The Big Boss and people in authority, you can totally ignore me. That’s between you and Him and has nothing to do with me.

The other day I got talking about religion with a friend, let’s call him Tim, and I asked him his thoughts about heaven and Tim told me firmly that he’s been ‘confirmed.’ 

I responded, ‘Cool, I received Holy Communion as a child.’

And I repeated, ‘What are your thoughts on heaven?’

Once more he said, ‘Mimi, I have been ‘CONFIRMED!’

This time a little louder and with even more emphasis.

I understood from his response that as far as my friend Tim is concerned, it has been confirmed that he’ll go to heaven.

At the age of twelve his (Catholic) church went through a ritual with him which made him believe that he’ll go to heaven.

I’m happy for him. I hope to see him there.

I won’t be talking about the rituals of churches or the general understanding which people may have about heaven. 

What I’ve researched and will be talking about is what the Bible and Jesus tell us about the ‘keys’ that open those pearly gates. 

I was curious to see what AI has to say about ‘the keys to the Kingdom of God,’ so I asked;

‘What are the keys to the Kingdom of God?’

For the truth I’ll go to the Bible which mentions specific ‘keys’ that are related to getting into heaven or staying out of it.

This entire series of, ‘Who Goes to Heaven,’ we’ll be exploring these keys.

But before we get going on these keys we’ll find out if this message is only for certain people.

In this Volume, ‘Are Christians the only ones who go to Heaven?’ we’ll discover who heaven is for… just for Christians? 

Let’s see what the Master (Jesus) Himself has to say about this.

And I’ll be quoting from the one and only Jesus from The Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Revelation.

Are Christians the only ones who go to Heaven? 

Is Heaven just for Christians, Jewish people and the ‘religious?’ It doesn’t look like it. The Parable of the Samaritan (below) tells us otherwise.

Is Heaven only for Jesus’ followers?

Does Jesus think that only his followers will get into heaven? That’s a firm no.

Because He tells everyone to repent (more below), not just His followers.

Let’s assume for a second that heaven were to be only for Jesus’ followers. This would mean that everyone born and dying prior to Jesus’ ministry would miss out on a place of eternal rest and joy in God’s presence.

Scripture tells us that sometime after Adam and Eve but before the flood,

Enoch walked with God
Enoch walked withGod, 
and then he was no more, 
because God had taken him away. 
(Genesis 5:24)

Sounds to me like Enoch went to heaven.
Roughly in the 9th century BCE a chariot took one of Yahweh’s faithful prophets, Elijah, up into heaven.

Up by a whirlwind into heaven
…there appeared a chariot of fire, 
and horses of fire, 
and parted them both asunder; 
and Elijah went up 
by a whirlwind into heaven.
(2 Kings 2:11)

These two Scripture verses alone disprove that one needs to know Jesus to be able to get into heaven. 

Would we need to be following the principles that Jesus lived by and live a loving, God-fearing life to get a foot in the door? Sure. But needing to ‘know’ and paying lip service to Him? No, He doesn’t care about that as we’ll read later. 

Will all Christians go to heaven?

Firstly, does Jesus think that all his followers will go to heaven? That’s another no.

Jesus made this very clear when He addressed ‘followers’ who He doesn’t recognise.

Such as f.i. all those people who do wonderful work in Jesus’ name; what did Jesus say about them? 

What did He say about certain people healing and donating and preaching and creating wonderful music all in Jesus name? Some people prophesied, casted out demons and performed  miracles in Jesus’ name.

Do any of these activities give us any brownie points and assure us a place in heaven?

According to the master; no not necessarily. 

It appears that there are entry requirements; I’m curious to find out what they are.

The answer is in the following Scriptures.

Contrary to popular belief; saying that we believe in Jesus on it’s own won’t swing those pearly gates; there are non-negotiables;

Do God’s Will (obey His Commandments)

Do God’s will (obey His Commandments)
“Not everybody who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ 
will get into the kingdom of heaven. 
Only those who do the will of 
my Father who is in heaven will enter.
On Judgment Day, 
many people will say to me, 
‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name 
and expel demons in your name 
and do lots of miracles in your name?’
But I will reply, ‘I never knew you.
Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’
(or more accurately 
‘those who say God’s laws aren’t valid’)
(Matthew 7:21-23, Exodus 20:1-17)

This Scripture verse is telling me that we may think that we know Jesus… but more importantly; does He know us?

Am I living my life according to His guidelines and directions and His Father’s Commandments?

We’ll be looking into these guidelines in more depth in the following volumes in this series.

Do God’s Will and obey His Law

From the Scripture verses we just read in Matthew 7:21-23 we know that obeying God’s Law (Exodus 20:1-17) is a requirement for an entry ticket into paradise. 

Makes sense considering that even footy grounds and gyms, bars and clubs and so on have rules and requirements if we want to enter and participate. And if we don’t follow their rules we won’t be let in or we’ll get kicked out.

You may be the best player in the country, donate the most money to the club, but if you don’t play by the rules; you’re out.

Same here. Ten simple rules (Exodus 20:1-17) and listening to the one who is holding the keys to the gate and obeying His directions. 

Ultimately it’s all about entering into a loving relationship with our Creator and His Son. And this is how we show our love, 

Obey the Commandments
Those who accept my commandments 
and obey them 
are the ones who love me. 
And because they love me, 
my Father will love them. 
And I will love them and 
reveal myself to each of them. 
(John 14:21)

God’s Commandments stand forever

Jesus is very clear about it. As long as heaven and earth last, this is how long the Ten Commandments stand and need to be obeyed.

As long as Heaven and Earth last
Remember that as long as heaven and earth last, 
not the least point nor the smallest detail 
of the Law will be done away with
not until the end of all things.
(Matthew 5:18 GNT)

So, there are rules and if we follow the rules and do God’s will we’re a step closer to eternal life.  

Anything else?

We need to repent

Secondly, does Jesus think that only his followers will get into heaven? 

No, He doesn’t. Jesus tells everyone to repent (more below), not just His followers.

Jesus repeats on numerous occasions that we need to repent. We need to feel remorseful for the things which we have done wrong and we must make up for it where we can and resolve to do better.

Jesus warned people wherever he went, that unless they repent… 

Unless you repent, you will all perish…
Now there were some present at the same time 
who told him about the Galileans, 
whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered them, 
“Do you think that these Galileanswere 
worse sinners than all the other Galileans, 
because they suffered such things?  
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, 
you will all perish in the same way . 

Or those eighteen, 
on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them; 
do you think that they were worse offenders 
than all the men who dwell in Jerusalem? 
 I tell you, no, but, unless you repent, 
you will all perish in the same way.”
(Luke 13:13-5)

Repent
Repent therefore, and turn back
That your sins may be blotted out.
(Acts 3:19)

Repentance clearly is another requirement. Sure we can call on Jesus if we were to muck up every now and then. However the idea is to not keep sinning (breaking God’s Commandments).

Will only religious people go to heaven?

Thirdly, must you be a Christian or a Jewish person or religious to get into heaven?

Jesus answered this question with his parable about the Samaritan.  

Love God and our neighbour

A lawyer asked Jesus what must I do to obtain eternal life? 

Which is another way of saying, How do I get into heaven?

The answer Jesus gave shows us that ‘religious people’ aren’t guaranteed a free pass.  

What do I need to do to get eternal life?
A lawyer stood up with a question to test Jesus.“Teacher, what do I need to do to obtain eternal life?”
He answered, 
“What’s written in God’s Law? 
How do you interpret it?”
The lawyer answered, 
“That you love the Lord your God 
with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
and that you love your neighbor 
as well as you do yourself.”

 “Good answer!” said Jesus.
“Do it and you’ll live.”

Looking for a loophole, 
he asked, 
“And just how would you define
‘neighbour’?”

Jesus answered by telling a story. 
“There was once a man traveling
 from Jerusalem to Jericho. 
On the way he was attacked by robbers. 
They took his clothes, beat him up, 
and went off leaving him half-dead. 
Luckily, a priest
was on his way down the same road, 
but when he saw him 
he went across to the other side. 
Then a Levite (religious man) showed up; 
he also avoided the injured man.

“A Samaritan traveling the road came on him. 
When he saw the man’s condition, 
his heart went out to him. 
He gave him first aid, 
disinfecting and bandaging his wounds. 
Then he lifted him onto his donkey,
 led him to an inn,

Jesus said, “Go and do the same.”

Jesus didn’t ask the scholar what denomination he belongs to, what church/synagogue he goes to. Jesus didn’t ask him if he shows up in church/ synagogue every week, if he tithes to the church and so on.

No, if anything, with regards to religion, in the parable Jesus mentioned that two religious people came by and neither one of these religious people were up to scratch.

So what do we need to do to obtain eternal life/go to heaven?

This was also mentioned

Love God with all your heart and soul
Jesus replied, “This is the most important: 
‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.
 Love Yahweh with all your heart 
and with all your soul 
and with all your mind 
and with all your strength.’ 
The second is this: 
Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 
No other commandment
 is greater than these.”
(Deuteronomy 6:4-6, Mark 12:30, Matthew 22:37)

There is one God (His name is Yahweh, some call Him  Jehovah) and we are supposed to love Him with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind and with all our strength.

And we are supposed to be treating our neighbours how we like to be treated ourselves.

With these two commandments Jesus pretty much sums up the Ten Commandments.

People always tell me how much God loves us. And this is true.

Are we loving Him back in a way that He requires?

Are we loving our Heavenly Father in a way that makes Him want to invite us in?

If we fulfill the requirements as set out in the Bible and as summarised and outlined in the books in this series, ‘Who Goes to Heaven?’  We can be confident that Jesus will invite us into His Fathers House.

In my Fathers house are many mansions

In My Father’s house are many mansions
In my Fathers house are many mansions. 
If it were not so, 
would I have told you that I am going there
 to prepare a place for you? 
And if I go and prepare a place for you, 
I will come back and welcome you into My presence, 
so that you also may be where I am.… 
(John 14:2-3)

So where does it start?
It starts with doing God’s Will and not our own.

Do God’s will to live forever
Love not the world, 
neither the things that are in the world. 
If any man love the world, 
the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world, 
the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, 
and the pride of life, is not of the Father, 
but is of the world.
And the world passes away, 
and the lust thereof: 
but he that does God’s will lives forever.
(1 John 2:15-17)

He that does God’s will lives forever. Not doing the churches or the pastor’s will. No, it is doing God’s will to live forever. Amen.

House of Prayer for all nations –
no favouritism

Here are more Scripture verses showing us that Heaven is for all people, not just the religious.

Foreigners joining
And the foreigners who join themselves 
to the LORD to minister to Him, 
to love the name of the LORD,
(Yahweh) 
and to be His servants—
all who keep the Sabbath 
without profaning it 
and who hold fast to My covenant 
I will bring them to My holy mountain  
and make them joyful in My house of prayer.  
… for My house will be called a house of prayer  
for all the nations.”

Thus declares the Lord GOD, 
who gathers the dispersed of Israel: 
“I will gather to them still others 
besides those already gathered.”
(Isaiah 56:6-8)

Sure there are requirements but that goes for whatever club you join or posse you want to be part of.

What are some of the entrance requirements?
Love the name of the Lord (Yahweh), minister to him, be His servant, keep the Sabbath holy, follow His Holy Commandments.

He will teach us His ways 
so that we may walk in His paths

This is the message that was revealed
to Isaiah son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem: 

And once more. In the last days people will stream to God’s House  and He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His paths, follow His law and His Word. 

He will teach us His ways
In the last days
the mountain of the house of the LORD 
will be established as the chief of the mountains; 
it will be raised above the hills, 
and all nations will stream to it. 
And many peoples will come and say: 
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, 
to the house of the God of Jacob. 
He will teach us His ways 
so that we may walk in His paths.” 
For the law will go forth from Zion, 
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
(Isaiah 2:3, Micah 4:1-3)

God welcomes every nation
Then Peter began to speak: 
“I now truly understand 
that God does not show favoritism,
but welcomes those from every nation 
who fear Him and do what is right.
(Acts 10:34-35)

God does not show favouritism. Anyone doing the right thing is accepted regardless of religion or denomination.

Myth busted
Many of the above mentioned Scripture verses busted the myth that Heaven is just for Christians or the Jewish people or the religious.

We’ll find out why these keys are relevant with regards to eternal life.

Eternal life
“I give them eternal life,
and they shall never perish;
no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
(John 10:28 )

There’s no question that Jesus promises us eternal life. And the who and the how and why is what we’ll be looking at in the next volumes of ‘The Ultimate Relocation Guide: From Earth to Eternity’ or in short, ‘Who Goes to Heaven?’

Thank you Mum for introducing me to Jesus. Thank you for the parables and the love you shared with me for the Son of God. Your daughter is continuing the tradition and I am forever grateful that you introduced me to the most important Man in my life, Jesus.
He promised us rest, Come to Me, all you who are weary burdened, and I will give you rest.

I pray for all Mums to find rest. Not just on Mother’s day, my wish for all Mums is to realise every day of the year that Jesus has our back.

I know that during the COVID19 season many Mums saw their homes convert into offices as well as schools. Your job may have tripled in volume and significance. People around you got sick and needed care and you provided and still are providing that care, and some of your charges died.
And yet, you keep going. And you continue to be that pillar of strength for all those around you. You are the best and  without you, this world is nothing and has nothing worth having. I applaud you!

My prayer for all the world’s Mums for the coming  year is to be blessed beyond your imagination. You are amazing angels sent from heaven! (2020)

Thank you Mum for introducing me to Jesus. Thank you for the parables and the love you shared with me for the Son of God. Your daughter is continuing the tradition and I am forever grateful that you introduced me to the most important Man in my life, Jesus.
He promised us rest, Come to Me, all you who are weary burdened, and I will give you rest.

I pray for all Mums to find rest. Not just on Mother’s day, my wish for all Mums is to realise every day of the year that Jesus has our back.

I know that during the COVID19 season many Mums saw their homes convert into offices as well as schools. Your job may have tripled in volume and significance. People around you got sick and needed care and you provided and still are providing that care, and some of your charges died.
And yet, you keep going. And you continue to be that pillar of strength for all those around you. You are the best and  without you, this world is nothing and has nothing worth having. I applaud you!

My prayer for all the world’s Mums for the coming  year is to be blessed beyond your imagination. You are amazing angels sent from heaven! (2020)

My children organised a ‘Mothers Day Luncheon’ last year. To honour the visiting Mums and in memory of my Mum, I searched for memorable, funny and to-the-point quotes about Mums and Motherhood.

This first post about the Sabbath is for my friend Mikey in Boston. Remember I said that I would post something for the Sabbath? Here goes!

Foreword

A House of Prayer for ALL People
For mine house shall be called
a house of prayer for all people,
for every one
that takes hold of my covenant . [1]

My children taught me to get by on only fitful periods of shuteye. Running our own business and moving house too often helped fast-track the crumbling of a perfectly healthy body for no good reason at all. 

No holidays, no weekends, no time to rest, no time to repair or replenish. 

When even time set aside for fun was scheduled as yet another chore to be done, I realised that conflicting priorities and values were powerfully driving a rudderless ship.

Poor time management skills, workaholism, misguided principles and loyalties, Superwoman Syndrome, whatever you want to call it, till I read the Bible front to back and back to front, I didn’t know what the word rest meant.

Rest to me meant the state your body falls into when your eyes close from sheer exhaustion and you can’t stay awake any longer, no matter how hard you try. Temporary release from that torturous state is what I would have defined as rest.

God said,
The Seventh Day is the Sabbath
Six days shall you labour,
and do all your work:
But the seventh day is the Sabbath
of the LORD your God:
in it you shall not do any work ..[2]

Wow, someone telling me to take a whole day a week off? Did I read that correctly? Now that’s an interesting concept. 

There are plenty of people who take a whole weekend off each week but few of us actually rest on those days.

My children literally begged me to take some time off, saying, ‘Mummy we miss you, we never see you anymore.’

Jesus said,

I Will Give You Rest
Come unto me,
all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. [3]

Jesus said, “Come,” and I came running, tumbling and fumbling.

No More Tears
The Lord GOD will wipe away
tears from off all faces .. [4]

How hard were those first few Sabbaths? I cried a lot. It’s OK to grieve about what could have been. It’s OK to catch up too. Fifty-two Sabbaths each year for thirty years equals nearly four and a half years of rest I never allowed myself. 

In addition to this there are all kinds of different Sabbaths throughout the year as well.

God tells us to rest on the Sabbath.  

 Keep the Seventh Day Holy
I am the LORD your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of slavery…
Remember the Sabbath day,
to keep it holy…
for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that in them is,
and rested the seventh day:
wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day,
and made it holy. [5]

And once more

Commanded You to Keep the Sabbath
Remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt,
and that the LORD your God brought you out from there through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm:
therefore the LORD your God commanded you
to keep the Sabbath day. [6]

GOD SAVED His people from slavery. Whereas slaves they had to work day and night, as soon as God delivered them, He told His people to have their day of rest and reminded us to keep this day holy.

God tells us that He Himself rested after six days of work and that makes the Sabbath pretty special.

My Sabbaths are now holy to me, and a delight for sure. To just hang out for a whole day each week, resting and recuperating, to study God’s Holy Word and share with anyone interested is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. 

To actively cease work, and know that it’s OK because God is in charge and taking care of business, is the perfect remedy for a burnt-out body needing regenerating.

If God Himself rested after six days of work as an example for us to follow, who am I to argue with that? 

Yes, for sure at one time I was a slave to the business, my husband and my children. However, after reading God’s Word I understand the meaning of no rest for the wicked.

No Peace for the Wicked
But the wicked are like the troubled sea, 
when it cannot rest,
whose waters cast up mire and dirt.
There is no peace,
says my God,
for the wicked. [7]

Before I grabbed hold of Jesus’ invite, I had well and truly given up. How could anyone work so desperately hard only to discover that all her efforts had been merely building castles in the air?

We Will Serve The Lord
Except the LORD build the house,
they labour in vain that build it:
but as for me and my house,
we will serve the LORD. [8]

Today my castles are still floating around. I believe God’s Word and as such I know that it is merely a matter of time for the foundation to be laid underneath my dream castles. I’ve been feeling the earth move already.

Be of Good Courage
I had fainted,
unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait on the LORD:
be of good courage,
and he shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the LORD. [9]

Shabbath Shalom!

This first post about the Sabbath is for my friend Mikey in Boston. Remember I said that I would post something for the Sabbath? Here goes!

Foreword

A House of Prayer for ALL People
For mine house shall be called
a house of prayer for all people,
for every one
that takes hold of my covenant . [1]

My children taught me to get by on only fitful periods of shuteye. Running our own business and moving house too often helped fast track the crumbling of a perfectly healthy body for no good reason at all. 

No holidays, no weekends, no time to rest, no time to repair or replenish. 

When even time set aside for fun was scheduled as yet another chore to be done, I realised that conflicting priorities and values were powerfully driving a rudderless ship.

Poor time management skills, workaholism, misguided principles and loyalties, Superwoman Syndrome, whatever you want to call it, till I read the Bible front to back and back to front, I didn’t know what the word rest meant.

Rest to me meant the state your body falls into when your eyes close from sheer exhaustion and you can’t stay awake any longer, no matter how hard you try. Temporary release from that torturous state is what I would have defined as rest.

God said,
The Seventh Day is the Sabbath
Six days shall you labour,
and do all your work:
But the seventh day is the Sabbath
of the LORD your God:
in it you shall not do any work ..[2]

Wow, someone telling me to take a whole day a week off? Did I read that correctly? Now that’s an interesting concept. 

There are plenty of people who take a whole weekend off each week but few of us actually rest on those days.

Thank you Mum for introducing me to Jesus. Thank you for the parables and the love you shared with me for the Son of God. Your daughter is continuing the tradition and I am forever grateful that you introduced me to the most important Man in my life, Jesus.
He promised us rest, Come to Me, all you who are weary burdened, and I will give you rest.

I pray for all Mums to find rest. Not just on Mother’s day, my wish for all Mums is to realise every day of the year that Jesus has our back.

I know that during the COVID19 season many Mums saw their homes convert into offices as well as schools. Your job may have tripled in volume and significance. People around you got sick and needed care and you provided and still are providing that care, and some of your charges died.
And yet, you keep going. And you continue to be that pillar of strength for all those around you. You are the best and  without you, this world is nothing and has nothing worth having. I applaud you!

My prayer for all the world’s Mums for the coming  year is to be blessed beyond your imagination. You are amazing angels sent from heaven! (2020)

My children organised a ‘Mothers Day Luncheon’ last year. To honour the visiting Mums and in memory of my Mum, I searched for memorable, funny and to-the-point quotes about Mums and Motherhood.
