Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

In my younger days, I supplemented my income with newspaper assignments, product shots for catalogs and occasional portraits. When I first started photographing my cats, I was shocked at how bad my images turned out. It became clear that just chasing my cats around with a camera would not produce great images.

I purchased several books on pet photography. These helped. I learned some useful tips that improved my images. But most of the books emphasized outdoor settings or studio photography. I don’t allow my cats outside. And while I own quite a bit of studio gear, I didn’t want to drag it out every time I wanted to photograph my cats.

I needed an approach that I could implement quickly and easily. I spent some time thinking about cat behavior and how I could turn my cats’ natural instincts and habits to my advantage. I experimented with lighting techniques, searching for methods that produced reliable results with minimal equipment and effort.

How to Take Beautiful Pictures of Your Cat records the results of my journey. It illustrates simple techniques that anyone can follow to capture great pictures of their cat.
