Be an active reader. As you read a particular work or book, read it first for the enjoyment of what it offers. The next time you read the work, look at how it is put together and what made it interesting to read. Look at the language and syntax and the literary devices that were used and what they did in making the reading pleasurable and impactful.

Writing leaves you vulnerable because you are exposing a part pf your inner self to the world and possible criticism form strangers; building a support group with a common interest is invaluable.

Take classes, go to workshops, read about how to write and then Write - write - write. Writing is often thought of as a solitary craft, but actually it is a communal experience. First the writer is communing with ideas, and expressing them, but it doesn't mean anything if no one else understands what you have written. Therefore, it is also good to either be part of a workshop or class to gain support, guidance, connections, inspiration and invaluable information. In turn you get to share resources, information and guidance with other people. This also helps build confidence in your craft. (less)
