Our Garden Mission Statement

Our garden mission statement

Hello to a New Gardening Year!

A brand new year has me thinking about gardening goals, and I decided to jot down a few that are important to me.  While doing this, I realized what I was really doing was writing a garden mission statement. Yes, I do love a good mission statement. Old habits die hard (or don’t die at all.) Business plans, year-end summaries, new budgets, spreadsheets, etc

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

My Year of Rest and Relaxation is the kind of book I almost put down—and then dared myself to keep going. I was irritated by it. I found it bleak and emotionally cold. And yet, I couldn’t stop reading.

Ottessa Moshfegh’s unnamed narrator is unlikable:

I tore through The Dream Hotel with a mix of obsession and dread—the kind where you can’t look away, even as the story presses uncomfortably close to reality. This novel terrified me not because it felt futuristic, but because it didn’t. The world La ...more

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms
Like most good-looking things, my house is high maintenance. My house makes it so I never, ever have any extra money. If my house starts to notice I’ve been squirreling away a hundred dollars here or there to try to get my kids to a national park for a week, the house breaks something. I think it has abandonment issues.
whoa. that's exactly like my house.

My first read of 2026 (found because it was recommended by Barack Obama as one of his favorites.) I love a good shipwreck/tragedy story (why, I have no idea!), and this one was unbelievable.

“Three Mississippi, Four Mississippi… Tucking Barbie underneath the throw pillow on my lap, I traced my finger over the red blooms that covered my library book. Abby, my little sister, lay dozing on the opposite end of the couch, sprawled flat on her back. She had a way of sleeping through anything—a loud television show, or even one of Momma and Daddy’s late-night arguments.”
Talya Tate Boerner, The Accidental Salvation of Gracie Lee

“spot on the couch, I listened to the nightly sounds of our house, as familiar as the hymns we sang every Sunday morning at Boon Chapel. The crack of the ice tray. The opening of the silverware drawer with its earsplitting creak. As Momma reheated Daddy’s supper, the smell of fried potatoes and salt pork filled the air. Abby and I had eaten hours ago. When Daddy worked extra late, Momma”

“It was funny the memories a person held onto, fuzzy flashes of life that stood out because the people inside them made them meaningful.”
