The Book of Psalms by Robert Alter

Wonderful to read, to break you out of the pattern of the familiar. Some truly striking phrases in this translation. Some of them fell flat, but it's good to have for some devotional reading. Some of the commentary, when it explains things like Hebre ...more

Hebrews Through New Eyes by Douglas Wilson

A good overview for those who don't want to read a huge tome. It also includes an index of every scripture referenced in Hebrews with a brief explanation. Worth the price alone. Makes a good perennial reference for any bookshelf. ...more

One of the more memorable of the series, because it raises the stakes so well in the middle of the book. Courage, integrity, and leadership are all on display. I continue to read these to my kids (editing a bit on the fly)

The final two volumes were easier and more interesting reads than the first two. It did make me want to reread the story as soon as I was done, but not badly enough to actually do it soon. It dumps a lot of information on the reader at the end, and t ...more

Ostensibly for the Classical high school student, but good for parents to read as well. We all need reminders from time to time about why we're doing the things we're doing. Short and succinct. ...more

Leadership and The Sin of Empathy by Joe Rigney

Very good summary of one of the main problems of our times. Biblical, pastoral. Every leader should read it, and the book that helped inspire it, "A Failure of Nerve."

The final chapter on proper compassion, using Jesus as an example, is fantastic.

I read this to my almost 15-year-old boy, because it's hard to find so concise a place where Biblical masculinity is mapped out without resorting to what makes women feel good.

The only flaw of this book is that it assumes some knowledge of the termin
