I grew up in Italy and immigrated to Canada when I was 27 years old leaving a familiar language, my culture, and all my friends and family behind.

When people ask me: “Why did you leave such a beautiful country?” I smile and say, “To find a good job.” But the truth is that I needed to take some distance from a not so great childhood.

I struggled growing up. I was bullied since I was very young. High school was hell due to problems I had with learning. I lost my father when I was 14 years old to a sudden illness, and anxiety made that time of my life very difficult.

I didn’t have much going for myself then. Except that I had a vivid imagination, and a mother who believed in me.

At the end of high school I decided to go to university to study

Hello Darlene,

thank you so much for your question. If I understand what you are asking then my answer is yes!

I am very much of a 'visual' writer, meaning that I try to write what I see in my mind and to help with the visualization process I do visual boards, collect photographs, draw maps, timelines etc. My drawings are terrible (definitely not my strength) but images of all kind are essential to me. I see, I elaborate/change/adapt in my mind, and I write. This is one of the reasons I take the time to do research on any given element or topic of my story.

Did you know that every element or place in The Layers actually exists or is being developed? For example, the Water Tunnel #3 is real. Google it and as you read or see images of it I am sure you'll recognize some of its features in the story. The upside down pyramids are an architectural concept explored in Mexico City to deal with overpopulation...The book is filled with details like this.

I really appreciate your question because it is so central to my creativity process.

And I am happy you enjoyed my story! (less)

Thank you Chandler for that question!

There were two things that motivated me to write The Layers.

The first comes from my work as a researcher. For decades I have written in academic journals and advocated for a better world for our children, especially in the educational sector. Children and youth have a tremendous potential that we squander by dysfunctional systems and by not respecting their rights, especially limiting their capacity to participate in society in any meaningful way.

I got to a point where I felt compelled to send youth a message of empowerment and I thought the best way of doing it was through the arts. The message in The Layers is that the future of humanity is in the hands of young people and I hope that Eva's and her friend's endeavours will motivate my readers to take action on matters that are important to them.

The second comes from my continued desire to push my own personal limits. I have always read a lot (despite being a very slow reader) and I have always marvelled at the ability of writers to build stories and create characters in such ways to have significant impact on people lives.

So, it started as a challenge with myself to see if I could do it as well. I started writing with my son who was a tremendous source of inspiration for the plot it self and some of the characters.

Global warming was something that he was fascinated about and it soon became my fascination too. As a researcher, I had the impulse to study and learn about the topics I was writing about, and I made a conscious choice to build a world that, as fantastic as it may seem, it could actually exist. There is not one structure or aspect of the physical world of The Layers that is not real or that is not currently being designed somewhere in the world.

I need to find a way to avoid spoilers and build some blogs around those elements because that's what made writing The Layers extremely interesting! If you read my blog "Layer 0 aka The Dome" you'll have an idea of what I am talking about. I was able to write that one since that's where the story begins...so no spoilers there!

I hope I answered your question. And thank you for your interest in my work.

I have questions for YOU!

Goodreads has a section called "ask the author".

But I think it should also have one for "ask the readers".

And so, for now I am creating this as a blog and I hope I will receive some answers from you.

In your reviews some of you mentioned that The Layers: Eva has left your with many questions. As I am writing the second volume in the series I am curious to know more about that:
