Born in Los Angeles, Marilyn is a fourth generation Californian and a California history buff.. Her grandfather started the Title Insurance and Trust Co in 1881. She attended Marlborough School for Girls, Stanford University and married Otis Chandler in 1951. They had five children and lived in San Marino. She went hunting, fishing, surfing, skiing and boating with her husband and family. She received a Masters in Urban Planning from UCLA in 1975.

Her volunteer work has included directorships on ten different non- profit organizations and three corporate boards. She chaired four of these.
