I can only answer for myself as the other half of Ginger Black is away, but for me it has to be the mystery of Kathy and the Fish Kettle in Edinburgh where my husband and I used to live.

We had a wonderful neighbour called Kathy who would pop in to water our plants when we were away. In truth she was was something of a busy body but we were sorry when we returned from one trip to find she had left for Australia at short notice following the death of her brother. The unfortunate thing was, she appeared to have left with half our valuables! The police were called and, though finding so signs of forced entry, confirmed there had been a spate of similar burglaries along the terrace and they were pretty sure they could identify the culprit who was not, to our relief, either female or called Kathy!

The police believed the offender was storing his swag in a cul de sac behind our house and we had a bird's eye view from our top floor. A while later they returned to enquire if they could 'stake out' the perpetrator's garage from our spare room. The CID duly arrived (much to my husband's excitement) with night vision goggles and the lot.

The 'sting' was a success and the police were delighted to find a treasure trove of stolen goods from houses all around the area. But sadly none of our precious things.

Some months later, when Kathy returned from her trip, we told her all about the neighbourhood burglaries to which she responded,

"Well thank goodness I had the wit to hide your valuables in the fish kettle! I couldn't believe you were stupid enough to go away and leave all that stuff out. Were it not for me, you'd have lost the lot!"
