The Flyleaf Newsletter for 6/12/16

Welcome to the Flyleaf Newsletter. I created Flyleaf to not only promote my writing and radio show, but to network with other professionals in the radio and writing industry.

Every two weeks, I’ll be sharing information about my political science novel, The One Taken from the Sea of Stars, my two blogs, The Possible World and The Chuck Taylor Buddhist and my radio show, The Bonfire Talks. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at shermeekam@gmail.com.

Best,

Shermeeka Mason, Author of The Flyleaf

News on the Novel:

Votes for The One Taken from the Sea of Stars is gaining momentum on the SOOP Publishing courtesy of supportive friends sharing the following link: http://soopllc.com/blog/book-ideas/on.... Thanks to them, the first installment of my novel currently has 1950 votes. I need to have 5000 in total to be published.

My novel was featured on the SOOP Publishing house’s online blog in May when I received a certain amount of votes. The One Taken from the Sea of Stars has also received notice on the SOOP Rocks Twitter page. It can also be found on Scriggler and Goodreads, where it can be downloaded for free!

And if you like what you’ve read, The One Taken from the Sea of Stars is available for $0.99 on Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Inktera, and Scribd. Please be sure to write a review! The more reviews I have, the more exposure and sales I accumulate!

Blog Spot:

The Possible World

For the month of May, The Possible World featured two entries: “Love Has Everything to Do with It,” which is about the search for love while struggling with mental illness and “Watching the News with Spirit,” a tribute to my Grandmother, Flora Lawrence.

But as much as I love posting, the main purpose of the blog is to form an online community where people can discuss and learn about mental illness and trauma. Thus, I strongly feel that contributors who have struggled with both at some capacity are the best teachers. So long story short, The Possible World is now accepting contributions starting in June!

There have been guest contributors two so far: “My Experience with Bi-Polar and Dissociative Identity Disorder” by Marci Redmond and “What Separates Me from Normal: Surviving PTSD” by Delaney McLemore. Their experiences have impacted so many readers that I’m constantly reaching out to folks who wish to share. The entry could be in essay form, an art piece, a video (with a link), a poem or any other form of expression. The ONLY stipulation is that those contributing are honest and aware that their entry will impact others, so may the impact be a positive one.

If there is anyone interested in submitting to The Possible World, send the entry, brief bio, and photo (optional) to shermeekam@gmail.com

The Chuck Taylor Buddhist

The Chuck Taylor Buddhist also featured contributions from two fellow Soka Gakkai International Members. Rochester North Zone and Member Care Coordinator Phillip Glashofer submitted “My True Bodhisattva of the Earth: A Tribute to My Mother, Bernice Glashofer,” a beautiful experience about his late mother. Syracuse Young Womens Division Youth Leader Lekeshia Sullivan shared her obstacles and vow to dance for the Ikeda Youth Ensemble in “Out of Darkness, Stronger Than Before.”

The Chuck Taylor Buddhist is accepting contributions from SGI members (or those interested in becoming members). If there is anyone interested, send the entry, brief bio, and photo (optional) to shermeekam@gmail.com

In Other Writing News

Collaboration with Dave Rine
I will be collaborating with friend and local comic book writer and illustrator Dave Rine on a writing project. He approached with the idea of writing a horror or science fiction piece and I immediately jumped at the chance. So I will be rewriting and submitting a horror short story entitled Home, which is about a young woman who meets a stranger in a hospital sanctuary and gets more than what she bargained for.

ImageOutWrite

I will also be submitting pieces to Rochester’s annual ImageOutWrite before the June 15th deadline. I have recited a poem entitled “The Lookout” at the ImageOutWrite Open Mic Writing contest years ago and was awarded $200. It was actually the VERY first time I earned a monetary prize for my writing, but most importantly “The Lookout” was well received. This year, I have both a short story and a poem in the works for this volume, which I am very excited about. Long story short, I hope my work is featured in their future publication. Wish me luck!

Camp NanoWrimo

I will be participating in this year’s Camp NanoWrimo, where I’ll be sharing an online cabin with my friends and fellow authors Tabitha Creech, Matthew Metzger, and LGBTIQA romance novelist and editor JM Snyder. Within two weeks, I will be writing character outlines for the sequel to The One Taken from the Sea of Stars every day, monitoring my word count. The entire purpose of “going to camp” is to encourage the habit of writing a desired amount of words every single day—a habit I myself need to get into. I’ll definitely keep everyone posted!

So The First Blog Entry Goes Like This

Written under my pen name, Octavia Davis, The One Taken from the Sea is about a loner whose life becomes very interesting when he finds a young extraterrestrial woman in his messenger bag. This book is the first in a three-part series and can be located on the following sites: Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, Scribd, Kobo, Inktera, Scriggler, and Goodreads.

I'm also trying to get it published through SOOP Publishing. All I need is your vote to make that happen. So please help me get my book published by visiting http://soopllc.com/blog/book-ideas/on... Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I can't even express how excited I am about this. I've been writing since the sixth grade, but I'd never thought that I would self-publish my own novel--let alone my own series. I'm actually working on the character outline for the second book while doing all I can to promote The One Taken from the Sea of Stars. So I've been busy for the most part.

Again, if you have any questions and/or comments, just leave them in the Comments section below and I'll respond quickly.

Take care and thank you for your support in advance,

Shermeeka Mason (aka Octavia Davis)
