Growing up reading straight fiction for lack of knowing many lesbian authors to read, I fell in love with Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice. As I got a little older, I loved Katharine Clifton and Count Lazlo de Almasy in the English Patient. The sheer passion, lust, and powerful love between the two left and indelible mark on me both as a writer and a reader.

Onto lesbian fiction, I can't even suggest a couple without Bette and Tina from the L Word. I know they may not be from the fiction genre you were thinking when you asked, but they are fictional characters and their chemistry was engaging and always hot. The rest of the L Word we can debate another time.

In books, I was enthralled with Nan and Kitty from Tipping the Velvet and really all of the couples Sarah Waters creates.

But if I had to weigh them all and boil everything down to one, I'd say Carole and Therese in The Price of Salt. The story was just so utterly romantic on so many levels. And the way Highsmith wrote their lovemaking was sublime. She wrote: "“Her arms were tight around Carol, and she was conscious of Carol and nothing else, of Carol’s hand that slid along her ribs, Carol’s hair that brushed her bare breasts, and then her body too seemed to vanish in widening circles that leaped further and further, beyond where thought could follow.” -- I mean, COMON! It really doesn't get much better than that.(less)

Home is Where the Heart Is

In 1986, we moved from the only home I’d ever known. I was thirteen and cried for days prior, believing my life was over. Even at that age, I felt utterly connected to a place as if my life force was somehow tethered to it. In the days before the big move, I visited all of my favorite spots, trying to memorize every little detail. Never again would I ice skate on the pond next to the house or hurt Read more of this blog post »
