In fact, I do that everyday. It clears my mind so I can hear my characters. Then I sit in the quiet of my room and listen. If that doesn't work, I challenge myself by asking what the reader is expecting to happen and then doing the opposite. This can be a very fruitful exercise and one that reminds me of the adventure of writing. Don't be afraid to take a path less traveled. Garrison Keillor once said that he likes writing because it takes him to unexpected places.(less)

A visual artist friend said, "I can't write because whatever I try to say seems to be taken the wrong way."
I said, "Of course you can write; everyone can. There are words everywhere you just put them together."
Then he said, "Just because I like words doesn't mean I can use them. I mean just because you like Henri Rousseau, doesn't mean you can paint like him."
I laughed and thought about--stick figures. I make stick figures that go the beach (or should I say sand dots on a page) and wear stick bikinis and lay around on stick hammocks. And I couldn't argue anymore.
Then I realized I like to write because my words can taken in so many ways and that their meanings are constructed by my readers and me. The challenge and adventure is gathering images that are just so, starting with sticks, fleshing them out, and then opening them up to audiences, inviting readers to make them real.(less)
