I. A. Ashcroft dwells in Phoenix, Arizona, alongside a wonderful tale-spinner and two increasingly deranged cats. The author enjoys reading and pretending to be other people while rolling dice and wearing fancy hats.

From Ashcroft's writing, you can expect dark fantasy, humor, violence, hope, flawed heroes, human villains, and more than a small dose of mythology.

I find writer's block comes in a lot of flavors. If I'm not feeling a particular scene, I skip to a different one that I am interested in - this is why I have scenes completed for two books down the road. If I NEED to write a scene I'm not feeling, though, I've found the best I can do is to lie down and go into a deep meditation for about twenty minutes. It is critical that everything is silent. This, unfortunately, means I do get interrupted a lot, and some critical scenes bother me for days or weeks like this. But once I get my twenty minutes... my brain pops out a little thread for me to tug, and it almost always eventually takes me where I want to go, even if it wasn't where I was expecting.

The thing I can't ever, ever do, though, is anything that isn't writing or thinking about writing, unless my writer's block is because I'm sleepy or hungry. Once my gears shift to a different task, my brain just will pretend the problem doesn't exist. And the scene? It'll never be written.(less)

Both will be published this year. I'm very excited to share them with you!(less)

The reason why ravens are unsettlingly intelligent creatures

I don't post a lot of science-related content in spite of writing science-fiction and fantasy—perhaps that should change!

There's a lot of fascinating research around avian intelligence as of late. One of the more mysterious stars of Raven Song is the flock ("unkindness", if you will,) of presumably extinct ravens that seem intent on following our heroes around. Ravens are playful creatures, but a Read more of this blog post »
