I grew up in the village of Symington, South Lanarkshire: a lovely wee village with a shop, a bus stop and a football pitch. I left the village to move to Glasgow, where I completed a degree in Scottish & Irish Literature.

After leaving uni, I spent a number of years moving around a good deal, a backpack never far from my shoulders. During this period I lived in New Zealand, Canada, the United States and Scotland, and stopped for longer periods of time in Nepal, Laos, Malaysia and Nicaragua.

I have worked as a sheep shearer, tree planter, apple packer, call center operator, barista, farm hand, English teacher and freelance writer and photographer.
