Gabriel Bergmoser is a Melbourne based author and playwright. After starting out in the youth theatre scene with his early plays Windmills, Life Without Me and Hometown, Gabriel completed his Masters of Screenwriting at the Victorian College of the Arts. He co-founded the independent production company Bitten By Productions, entering the Melbourne theatre scene with the one-act comedy Reunion and the futuristic Babylon Trilogy of noir thrillers. Gabriel's 2015 Beatles comedy We Can Work It Out opened to sell out shows and rave reviews – it has also been performed in Queensland and returned to Melbourne stages for the 2018 Fringe Festival.

The biggest lesson I learned from Boone Shepard is that assuming you'll get a book 2 is super arrogant - I did in the end but it didn't look like such a sure thing initially and consequently I made sure American Adventure didn't end on a glaring cliffhanger, in case there was no book three. Now with The Hunted and sequels I'm making sure that every book could easily be both the first and last you read in this series - that they'll be rewarding if you read in order, but satisfying on their own terms with no massive dangling threads. I think young writers have an inclination to think in terms of writing a series when generally your readers will thank you for giving them a complete and satisfying experience as opposed to one chunk of a story. If you can tell the whole thing in a single book, do it. (less)

Ten years since the Emmys

Picture The weekend just gone marked ten years since what I see as the real start of my career – winning the Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award and being flown to the International Emmys in New York to accept. Somewhat symbolically, I didn’t notice the milestone because my head has been buried in a TV writer’s room for the past week.

Given how much the Ustinov meant to me, on a few differe Read more of this blog post »

“Looking for experience was a beautiful idea when you were lying on a couch reading Kerouac in your share house; less so when your determination to just follow the road only meant ending up on more road.”
Gabriel Bergmoser, The Hunted

“most people have no idea who they really are beneath who they think they are.”
Gabriel Bergmoser, The Hunted

“before, a slicing, tearing burning in her right leg that made her crumple and bite down on her wrist, drawing blood before she would let herself scream. She fell hard against the metal of the car. She tried to move but something held fast, something that wrenched at her leg. Her ears rang. She reached down and felt her ankle. That was a mistake. The pain seared again as she felt the metal jaws and jagged teeth that had snapped shut on her leg. A trap, left for anyone trying to use this car to escape. And she had been stupid enough to try. Gritting her teeth, her eyes streaming and the occasional whimper escaping no matter how hard she tried, she pulled apart the trap. She felt metal tearing at flesh and even the smallest effort to rest weight on her leg made her want to collapse. The trigger mechanism she’d stepped on raised and clicked back into place, the trap an open circle of serrated metal again. She moved clear, pulling herself up on the car, then she heard snarling and grunting that seemed to come out of nowhere.”
Gabriel Bergmoser, The Hunted
