Gordon Jack always wanted to be a writer. In third grade, he put that on his “What I want to be when I grow up” list, just behind astronaut and professional dog walker. While working towards this goal, he had jobs as an advertising copywriter, English teacher, librarian, and semi-professional dog walker. The Boomerang Effect is his first novel. He lives in San Francisco with his family.

As a high school librarian, I read a lot of young adult fiction and most authors take these issues very seriously. We're seeing a lot of stories like this now, I think, because of the times we're living in. I also think publishers are responding to what's selling. After John Green's The Fault in Our Stars became such a critical and commercial success, it seemed the marketplace was flooded with terminal illness stories. Now I'm reading a lot of stories dealing with a variety of mental health issues. Some books are better at depicting the realities of this than others. Neal Shusterman's Challenger Deep, for example, is an amazing YA novel that doesn't romanticize the topic at all. When authors use mental illness as a plot device to create romantic tragedy, however, I feel they can oversimplify serious, complicated conditions and not help readers develop a clearer understanding of how they impact people's lives.(less)

“The envelope was embossed with the logo of my father’s law firm—Barry, Yu & Singh, an appropriate name for a ruthless pack of attorneys. Walter Yu was actually senior partner, but he settled for second billing so that the firm’s name would evoke fear in opposing counsel.”
Gordon Jack, The Boomerang Effect

“I thought I was taking a boring piece of paper and making it look cool, when in fact, I was taking something cool and making it flat and generic. It was the complicated and imperfect folds that made people interesting. The last thing we should be doing is trying to iron them out.”
Gordon Jack, The Boomerang Effect

“Just last month, he was the social pariah after he told his father we used a thousand-dollar bottle of wine to make sangria popsicles.”
