It took me 5 years to write and publish Penny the Brave... it didn't have to take that long.

Make sure you have a clean writing space without distraction. Turn on some music if you must, but leave the internet alone (unless you're needing to do research). If I play music or playlists from the internet, I sometimes become greatly distracted just by trying to find a new song, so be wary.

Setting a word goal for yourself really helps (i.e. 5,000 words a week, 500 words a day, 10,000 words a month). Set it, and then tell a few friends that you did so. It helped me to be held accountable by others - though, with practice, I have had to rely less and less on others.

I've never liked writer's block. We go way back. I feel like it's a bit different for each person, too.(less)

The next best thing about being a writer is hearing that someone was really touched by your story. Without readers, our books would be pretty lonely, and to hear that someone was really captured by something I wrote is a such a phenomenal feeling!(less)
