I was a primary and secondary classroom teacher for 35 years, influenced early on by the ideas of A.S.Neill and John Holt (amongst many other writers from the 70s), and then a teacher educator at the University of Canberra.
I took time out mid-career to qualify as a psychotherapist, and then practised for about 10 years. My PhD thesis (called Mating with the World ) was based on some of the experiences my young clients and I had.
I've also always been a writer, and have published four books.
School Portrait (McPhee/Gribble, 1987) told the story of four primary school students in my class and the building of (and living in) a mock medieval village for a couple of months.

There was graffiti in alleyways and I imagined the scene at the dead of night when it was painted. There was a milk hatch in my daughter's house where I was staying, and I thought about the days when milk was delivered to the door. And, as I walked the streets of Coburg or sat in cafes with my computer and earphones, I began to write about what I love about Dickens or Melville, I thought about my years as a teacher and what it felt like to be teaching English ... and a story began to form itself.(less)
