A Brooklyn-born, recovering businessman, John Calia has been a naval officer, banker, entrepreneur and consultant. He began writing his blog “Who Will Lead?” in 2010 attracting more than 120,000 readers. The campaign yielded about 2000 downloads, about a third of which were freebies. Since then I have sporadically promoted the book on various book websites for fees ranging from $30 to $100. The resulting royalties have never covered the cost. (less)

My 100-year-old self

My 100th Birthday celebration will take place about mid-century. You’re all invited. It won’t be easy to reach that age. My Dad passed away a few years shy of his 90th. But, I figure 100 is within reach with the help of a handful of highly skilled people and a lot of technology.

There’s a history of heart disease in my family. So, I might have a new heart by then – one grown using my stem cells ins Read more of this blog post »

I’ve started listening to the Blood of Hercules audiobook and I’m about 20% in, but I’m not sure I’m really enjoying it.
I can’t tell if it’s the translation or the story itself.
Should I keep going?

It was supposed to be a mystery that was also funny. Or maybe a funny mystery. The problem was that (a) it wasn’t funny, and (b) the book didn’t explore the mystery.

“Amazon review: The world building in this novel is supreme. It’s 2049, and the Space Force is up and running. Cars drive themselves in efficient, bumper-to-bumper traffic systems. Cryogenics is a thing, and so are advanced medical implants.

There are also scary “advancements” in society such as a Culture Index system (similar to current day China’s) in which the party in power controls how citizens behave by tying their behavior to employment opportunities. Every person is monitored via an unobtrusive implant and/or AI personal assistants.”

“Creating individuality, which creates and protects others' individualities is good.”
Zaman Ali, MORALITY An Individual Dilemma

“Usually, even getting exactly what you want turns out not to have been what you really wanted. So, my son, if you ever find a sliver of happiness and peace, just be thankful and live. Don’t reach for more, because a sliver is more than most people ever find.”
Blake Crouch, Upgrade

“(Alex and Laurel have three young kids, too, aged seven, nine, and eleven. I find these spoiled children more insufferable every time I see them. At this rate, I expect that very soon my nieces and nephews will be suitable only to be sewn up in a burlap bag with a wolverine and tossed into the nearest river.)”
William Landay, All That Is Mine I Carry with Me

“But it is hard to say no to my brother, whose invitations feel like commands. He says You wanna play golf? with the same presumption that a rich man says to his driver Will you bring the car around?”
