Maintaining the Health and Wellness of Aging Parents
Your parents’ health and wellness become more important as they age. Most people would associate old age with the deterioration of health. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Children can assist in their parents’ healthy aging.
The simplest things will matter as children guide parents in this time in their life. There are many activities that one can do with their mother and father to promote a wise and healthy aging for them.
An article from PinnacleCare notes that the key to healthy aging is to “remain mentally, socially, and physically engaged.” The following activities that promote healthy aging may help you.
Regular Exercise
Aging may hasten the decrease of reflex power in old people. However, taking care of your parents’ physical well-being can slow this down. For example, encouraging them to do walking routines around the neighborhood can work their extremities out. If walking is a safety concern for you, then you can try indoor physical activities. There is yoga for older people for those parents who are interested. However, if they want something where they can sweat it out more, they can try aerobics.
Healthy Diet
Although healthy eating should be practiced by everyone, seniors would benefit from it more because their bodies have changing needs. Aging parents need more nutrients. Among these include vitamin B12, calcium, potassium, and even fiber. Eating fiber can help lower the risk of heart disease, while increasing calcium intake can promote strengthening of the body’s bones. The list of nutrients needed for the health and wellness of an aging adult is accessible on the Internet. A quick search can lead you to different resources.
A Unique Activity
Mental health is equally important to older adults’ physical well-being. According to Dr. Patricia Bloom of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, encouraging aging parents to do something they’ve never done before can “stimulate the mind and get them out into social situations that can enhance their wellbeing.”
Go Out
Social health should also be a top priority in promoting the health and wellness of aging parents. As they grow older, their children tend to focus more on their own life. This may lead them to feel lonelier. Hence, it is important that they continue to build their relationships outside of their own home. For example, aging parents can join organizations that they like or even attend community activities from time to time.

Life and the Aging Process
Everyone knows that life is a never-ending cycle, although it doesn’t mean that we’re immortal. It simply means that for every passing person, new life is born. No one wishes to grow old, even some go to great lengths to look young. Some people dye their hairs just to cover the gray ones and use different products to look young.
But no matter how much we try to conceal it, our body will always reveal what’s real. No one wants to experience the struggles of aging. The challenge of going up and down the stairs and stopping every five steps to a catch a breath is tiring or talking to someone and not hear most of what they’re saying is excruciating.
Aging affects the function of all body systems because unlike young people, the reproduction of cells lessens during aging. It also affects organs dependent on how well a cell functions within them. Cells in the kidneys, liver, testes, and ovaries decrease depending on the body age. The brain remains healthy and doesn’t lose brain cells; but for people who have had a stroke or have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s, then brain cells will slowly deteriorate.
Bones become less dense because the body absorbs less calcium from food, and joints begin to thin because of longtime usage. Muscular structure and body fat change due to the decrease of growth hormones and testosterone levels that develop muscles.
Aging eyes occur during this stage, and the condition called presbyopia—an eye condition where the lens stiffen—may also develop. Older people need brighter lights when reading because as they age the lens of the eye becomes denser, and the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) loses its sensitivity and that can affect eyesight.
Elderly people experience a lot of physical changes, as well as emotional changes when they age. They become more sensitive and in need of care and attention, so that’s why some children give their parents the best aging care available. Aside from these changes that come with aging, not everyone appreciates how beautiful the process is.
The older a person becomes, the more mature they’ll be because of the challenges they’ve surpassed in life. This is why young people seek advice from the older generation. Elders have been through a lot, and they have solutions in almost every situation.
Aging can be scary, but everyone should learn to enjoy each stage of life. Everyone will grow old and eventually pass away, but don’t worry—learn to enjoy the ride because this is all a part of the cycle of life.

How to Live the Life You Want
Life is like freediving the bottom of the ocean. You need to hold your breath and not let yourself drown so that you can reach the deepest parts. You need to open your mind because you won’t know what complications you’ll encounter as you discover the great abyss. And like diving, you have the option to continue until you find what you’re looking or stop and settle within your comfort zone.
Living the life you want is a choice, and each choice you make leads you to where you are now. But how do you live your life based on how you want it? First, you have to set a goal and make it your life’s purpose. Living a life with a purpose gives you a hint of where you want to be in the next couple of years or how you want to spend those years.
Having purpose sets your priorities on how you want to spend your daily activities. It also gives you a chance to do what you are passionate about because when you have a purpose, you are driven to chase your goals and fulfill it.
Once you’ve fulfilled your purpose, you also have to figure out a way to live right. Living rightly doesn’t mean to be righteous. It’s being selfless and knowing how to socialize with the people around you. It preserves your values as a human being and gives you the opportunity to help those who need help.
Having the life you want gives you a chance to live life with abundance, not just in some aspects but in everything. Remember, though, living a life with abundance should not give you the notion that you are above everything and everyone. Keep in mind to always be humble. Keep your feet on the ground because as what others say, life is like a wheel. You don’t always remain at the top; there are times that you will experience what it feels to be at the bottom.
Maybe today you’re still dreaming you will drop everything and travel or have a company of your own. The endless possibilities of how you want to live your own life are still out there, and the chances are still high. Don’t just sit there and wait because your dream life is not going to magically happen—you have to work for it. Remember that you have the power to decide on how you want to live your life; just don’t forget to believe in yourself. The wheel is still turning, so make the right decisions ’til those decisions take you to where you want to be in life.

The Importance of Mourning a Death
When we think about the future, we start thinking about the life ahead of us—what type of house we want to live, our future family, and the kind of lifestyle we’ll live. Yet no one ever thinks about death.
Sorrow and grief come after death, which are the least favorite emotions people feel. We want to live happily, but without grief or sadness, we won’t realize the true meaning of happiness. Death has a different impact on different situations. The psychological effects of death of a child may be different from the psychological effects of death of a parent.
The coping mechanism of a child toward his or her parents’ death may vary in different ways, considering the child’s age. Grade school–age kids may express their grief in anger, as well as detaching themselves emotionally, which can help them immediately deal with the loss. Some may even ask questions because they can’t comprehend what’s happening.
On the other hand, adolescents understand the meaning of death. Some deal with pain through separating themselves from the family and dealing it on their own. And some also deal with grief in unhealthy ways, just like taking narcotics or alcohol. Either of these can affect some children for a long time. However, some deal with their grief in a positive way. It differs, depending on the child’s ability to cope.
One type of grief is when a parent loses a child. Normally, parents want to see their children grow up and live beyond their years, not the other way around. The way parents cope with this death depends on the situation. When the child dies through suicide, accidents, or murders; parents will have a harder time processing the death. Some go overboard and becomes obsessed with the case. If the child was terminally ill, the parent still has time to process losing their child and experience anticipatory grief (a grief that occurs before the loss).
Each loss has a different effect on everyone, whether a parent losing their child or children losing their parents. And the best coping mechanism for death or loss is looking for someone to talk to. Look for a support group where you can vent out emotions so you can understand what you are feeling. It also helps when you divert your attention to other hobbies. Engage yourselves in writing, dancing, or things where you can express those heightened emotions. Each grief is unique, and each one of us should be patient when undergoing the process.
We all hate dying or losing someone important in our lives, but death is what makes life beautiful. It reminds us that every cycle begins and ends. No one can escape the reality of death, and the best way we can deal with this is by living our lives to the fullest and always making every second count.

Future Plans for Travel Goals
“Life is short” is the perfect statement anybody should say to convince someone to live a little. Stuck in this competitive world, life almost feels like a never-ending cycle. If one looks at the daily activities of an average person, it’s pretty dull. It’s like listening to the same song over and over again—waking up, going to work, and going home to sleep. Unwinding during weekends is actually a bonus that other people do to destress.
Every millennial dreams to experience the beauty life has to offer. And insufficient income actually hinders that dream. That’s why almost all insurance companies are offering different deals to ensure everyone has a bright future.
It’s actually fun to imagine the future, and everyone has a different perception of it. For the elderly, they just want to spend their remaining days with their families; for parents, they think more of their children’s future; but for singles (especially single millennials), most of them imagine their future traveling around the world and having fun.
When people say the word travel, they often think of it as going somewhere and spending money. The opposite is true, though—traveling doesn’t have to be costly. People just need to research more on cheap traveling or free traveling opportunities that different organizations are offering today.
Some opportunities that offer free travel include joining a farmer’s organization and exchanging farm work for lodging and free food in different countries. Joining a photography or writing contest that requires traveling anywhere in the world is another way. Going on an exchange program that will give an opportunity to study in different countries is one offered by universities.
Options are sprawling everywhere, and all everyone has to do is to prepare themselves mentally and physically. One important tip when it comes to traveling is, everyone should invest their money on cheap traveling insurance to cover the what-ifs (i.e., accidents on a trip, flight cancellations, or medical evacuation expenses) on a trip.
They should secure their bank accounts, especially their debit cards for traveling abroad. They should know what type of banks they can access using their debit card abroad and know if the bank charges overseas transaction fees and how much. Stashing an amount of cash in case of theft is not a bad idea either.
Everyone needs to learn to think ahead of the possibilities of life. Whether they’re off to a luxurious trip or just a low-budget vacation, they should always have a game plan. Thinking about the future or what disaster might happen on a trip may be scary, but as the doctors say, “Prevention is better than cure.”

All About Growing Old
Perhaps the reason why many of us view growing old as a negative is the perception that it usually comes with disadvantages. Many may cite deteriorating health and fewer opportunities as the consequences of aging.
But just like any other perception, viewing aging in a bad light is all in the mind. We can always shift our perspective to a positive one. Growing old gracefully is possible. Here are some ingredients to make growing older a lot sweeter.
Let Go of Negativity
Thoughts on growing old are often met with loneliness because it is easy to associate it with passing away. However, succumbing to these thoughts will cause more harm than good. It is better to let go of the negativity and think of the what makes aging great instead. There are many advantages of growing old, and these depend on the person going through it.
Those of us who have worked a nine-to-five all our lives most likely did not have much time pursuing our passions because of our rigid schedules. However, the retirement that comes with growing older finally gives us a chance to pursue an unlimited break and finally get on with what we love to do.
Face Challenges
Once you let go of negativity, facing the challenges that come with the aging process becomes easier. Most of the challenges relate to aging is our health. Although it may be true growing older means growing weaker as the years roll by, there are remedies that you can pursue.
Adhering to a healthier diet is one major step toward this. Older people need more nutrients in their body to fight diseases, and eating right will help. This also means that more unhealthy food should be consumed less or never at all. Giving up junk and cutting down on red meat are small compromises if you look at the grand scheme of things.
There’s No Other Time than Now
Growing old is inevitable, but regret should not be. Do not wait for tomorrow to pursue the passions you’ve been putting off for a long time. Aging people do not have the luxury of time. Pursuing the things you want to pursue is best done now.
Trying things you never did in your younger years is a major way to graceful aging. The beauty of growing old is that it gives us more chances of catching up on untapped possibilities and desired outcomes.
Tie Up Loose Ends
Aside from doing the things you love, social connections and relationships are also important. Not having much time is also applicable here. If you have grudges or resentment toward a friend, a relative, or any loved one, settle it now. It may be hard, but it can’t also be put off for later.

Family: The Real Treasure of Life
One of life’s most fulfilling moments is having a family. Every person’s dreams in life includes creating a family. Who wouldn’t, right? Being able to have a perfect family nourished with love and compassion with each other gives joy.
The family is the basic unit in society. The purpose of a family is to guarantee the continuation of mankind, both naturally through procreation and socially through social interaction. Besides the fact of what family means, for a person, the family serves as an anchor that keeps them sturdy when things go wrong.
Some draw inspiration from their family to achieve their life goals. Try asking a person why they want to succeed in life and their answer would be for their family. The love of a family can definitely influence a person in many ways. This can affect the person’s mind-set—whether they have a positive or negative perspective on life. Also, as a primary social unit, the ability of a person to socialize begins with the family.
A perfect family doesn’t exist, don’t worry. Each family operates differently in a beautiful way. It shares the same goal—to have an unbreakable bond with each member. Bear in mind that the love of a family is life’s greatest blessing. The people who will never leave a person hanging, especially during hard times, is their family.
Technically, people who share the same bloodline are described as family. Time has changed, and the definition has evolved. It doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone must be related to be considered a part of the family. As long as a group of people share the same interests or ideals, they can be thought as a family. For example, in a workplace, each coworker looks out for each other and they share the same interest, so they are considered a family because they care for each other.
The symbols of love and family can be interconnected as one creates meaning from each. If one thinks of love, they imagine a heart. Now love is a feeling and the heart is the visualization of love. Try telling someone to keep imagining the heart. Ask them who are the people that can make them feel love. They would say the people closest to them, and who are these people? They are their family.
A popular line from the animated film Lilo and Stitch poignantly sums up the idea of family: “Ohana means ‘family.’ Family means ‘nobody gets left behind or forgotten.’” This means that wherever a person may be in the world, he would always have a family to come home to because the bond and love a family shares is greater than anything in this world.
