Tequila. Lots and lots of tequila.

Seriously, though--if your mind is empty, you have to fill it before anything worthwhile is going to spew forth. "Talking To Luke" had been in a drawer for ten years. I had absolutely NO IDEA what it needed in order to be any type of commercial success. I just knew it needed **something.** Then I watched Les Revenants on Netflix. It's a French series (with subtitles) about a community where people who'd been dead for years suddenly reappeared and tried to restart their old lives. The sight of them standing outside locked doors, knocking in vain, gazing through windows at their families, at children they'd never met--the horrified and often cruel reaction of the living townspeople--it didn't hurt that one of the main characters was a physical ringer for one of my main characters. I took that as a sign. I just KNEW that I had to pull TTL out of the drawer and get it into print. And guess what? The inspiration was there. Writers block? Gone.(less)

The novel tackles some difficult issues, like animal abuse and cruelty so prevalent in this area, much of it perpetuated by shelter employees and animal control officers. The "mystery" is how they get away with time and again, and why the community shows no outrage. (less)

Best Article About Self-Publishing I've Ever Read

This is probably the best article I've ever read about self-publishing. And yes, the title is facetious.

Love this line: "Yes, it used to be the equivalent of cheap vanity press, but that is light years from today’s reality."

“What was the determining factor in a person’s death—the key that allowed some to move on, and held others hostage in a world that no longer had a place for them? “Here”
Diane Ryan, Talking To Luke: Haunting Gets Personal.

“Grief, but also serenity. A wife who had accepted her husband’s death as a natural stage of his life, not the conclusion of it. “But”
