Beautiful story told from the perspective of a little girl being shuttled between her poor family and her aunt and uncle, who are more loving a well off.

Great tension from the beginning. I really liked the first half especially. Then it got a bit wordy, with a bit too much talk. The ending was a bit melodramatic. But for its time it was probably very original.

The first part seemed rather like a conventional detective/police procedural but the last 50 pages or so were incredibly exciting and built to a satisfying climax.

This novella is truly a masterpiece. It builds, quietly and slowly, to a powerful, beautiful ending.

I read 440 pages of this novel but then stopped caring about the protagonist. This reads like a memoir. I liked it a lot at the beginning because the writing is very clever and funny from the narrator's perspective. But it has very little plot. So it ...more
