I was born in Thailand in 1966 because my father was posted overseas for his job. When I was four years old, my parents moved to Switzerland and then when I was seven, they were posted to the Philippines. To provide a more balanced education, I was sent to boarding school in England where I excelled at precisely nothing. Undaunted, I eventually graduated with a degree in Electronic Systems Engineering and took up a career in IT, something which has in no way prepared me to be an author.

I have a beautiful wife and three wonderful children who dutifully pretend that I'm an author who's tinkering at IT rather than the reverse! I love reading, windsurfing, running, walks in the country, travel and meeting new people.

I realised quite quickly that there aren't many good fictional couples who are categorically 'a couple', at least for the major part of the stories they exist in and the reason is, of course, that the couples we root for are the ones who get together in 'boy meets girl' stories. So, to cut a long search short, I've chosen Darian Frey and Trinicia Draken from 'The Tales of the Ketty Jay' by Chris Wooding. Why?

Chris Wooding writes excellently and his depictions of a Steampunk world in the five books that make up the 'Ketty Jay' series would only be mediocre without the excellent characterisations. Darian Frey is a rogue with few immediately obvious redeeming features. He's lazy, greedy and an inveterate womaniser (or thinks he is), but he's also loyal and fiercely protective of his crew. Trinicia Draken is a lost cause...an impossibly beautiful pirate and stone-cold killer who has tried several times to kill Darian, but then perhaps she has good motive!

They don't seem like a promising prospect as a couple but that's one of the reasons why Chris Wooding's series is such an engaging read.(less)

One sentence to sketch out each chapter in the book. Then a paragraph for each scene. Now, if you run out of steam writing one part, just put it aside and work on another.

Another useful trick that I stumbled on by accident is what I call 'bridging'. If you find yourself stuck, it's often because you don't know what to put in this sentence right here. You're working in a linear way and this bit that comes after the bit you just wrote is proving troublesome. Often you know where it needs to lead to, three paragraphs from here, maybe five pages further forward, so great! Leap forward and write that bit first. Once it's done, it's amazing how easy it is to bridge the gap!(less)

Goodbye Amazon!

I've removed all three of my books from Amazon KDP because no one is finding them and no one is reading them.

Most of us aspiring authors dream of being swept up by a trad publisher, paid a mint in royalties and be left to get on with writing more wonderful stuff. How wonderful that some dreams do come true, but how sad that's for less than 1% of them. If nothing else, I'd really love for my book t Read more of this blog post »

For historical i would like to suggest something a bit different and say an author called MK Hume, who has written a trilogy about the legends of King Arthur and who currently has 2 books published on a series about Merlin.
The Bloody Cup (King Arthur, #3) by M.K. Hume Her books are fantastic adult historical fiction and really detailed and well-reserched, so i would highly recomend them.

Chick-lit i would recomend Mandy Baggot Strings Attached by Mandy Baggot or Carol E Wyer Surfing in Stilettos by Carol E. Wyer

General fiction i would recomend The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton and The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

If you would like me to suggest any other titles for different genres then i can, as i do read a variety of diverse fictional works. x

Likewise Lucinda. I'm in a book club and it will soon be my turn to propose a book to read. Can you suggest a couple of great books, any genre?
