Veneer, a novel about social media, mental health, and all sorts of other contemporary stuff

So I have written a novel about social media. And how weird it is for me to feel a little uncomfortable about pimping my book out across the channels and via this blog. I guess this is the way of the modern author, always hustling, always looking for a thumbs-up and a good review...Actually, it's not just us authors, is it? Everyone's chasing the "likes"!

I heard something on BBC Radio 4, at the beginning of October 2019; a few of the popular social media channels are considering removing the like button from posts, so others (with fewer likes) don't feel inadequate and the person posting doesn't fall into the habit of measuring their self-value by the number of likes they get.

Good idea or unnecessary? Discuss!

The subject of online approval features in Veneer, as does trolling, ghosting and most other things ending in "-ing".

I would love to hear your thoughts about the subjects raised as well. Please read the overview in the meantime.

Overview of Veneer

"Happy Anniversary from Facebook!

The message popped up on Amy’s screen like a surprise guest. How did neurotic, idealistic Amy ever manage to get through life before Facebook? And where is John, her husband of 25 years? Or was that 89p anniversary card the sum total of his affection for Amy?

Her social media-addicted niece Jade has her own challenges to contend with over the lack of likes (of Instagram followers) and appreciation for her gym body. And if only the gorgeous Justin would acknowledge her presence.

Nayna, the council’s social media officer appreciates their frustrations but then it’s her job to deal with the highs and - mainly - lows of resident engagement. She figures that the Internet owes her love - in the shape of online dating. Yet the giant ginger-haired computer programmer Dmitry is too shy for social media and real people, and his lonely existence revolves around his widowed-mother.

Set in a fictional London borough in England, Veneer is a bittersweet story about being so distracted by the demands of social media and technology that we lose sight of what we hold most dear in our lives."

If you like the sound of Veneer and you're in the market for a new book, please pop over to and grab an e-copy of my eBook.
