I worried too much about ensuring my writing was what an editor would want, not what I had passion about. Today's technology has made this paradigm all but obsolete. The many publishing paths available to aspiring authors have created new opportunities that never existed before. If you want to write - write! If you have a story to tell - write it down!

When you have an idea it is important to plant it, water it, and watch it grow. You must make time to write. I recognize that in today's fast-paced world this can sometimes be akin to fighting among starving people for that last morsel of food. But, if you want to be a writer, you have to do this! Remember: writers write. Duh!

Lastly, remember that being a writer is not just about writing. It includes: re-writing, editing for content and grammar, cover art (plus sometimes illustrations and interior art), copyright registration, and ISBNs. You will need a team to do this. Do your research and find the people or businesses that you believe you can trust to help you. Paying for these things is not wrong, just expensive. But when it comes to such an important thing as the cover you may need to get this professionally done (unless you know a really good artist - you know who you are :) Writing a book is one thing, publishing it is entirely another.
