Stories from Arunachala Diaries : Living a different Reality
Sri Joydip
The Bus entered Tiruvannamalai Bus Stand . The headlights continued to touch neon signs. One of this neonsigns was coming repeatedly. The falling and passing of light in the neonsign “Krishnagiri”, was creating a mystical play of air of darkness, invaded by storm of light .
That was exactly, what was happening to me. Coming from Management background, where the foundation of our understanding was based on competition and strategy . Dalai Lama’s speech somehow challenged my thought process . In fact, these was a clash of civilization to me . The Tibetan civilization based on compassion, which was core to Yoga, and the civilization of the rest of the world , starting from China, based on competition were always in conflict.
Eleven years before when I get down from the Bus , in January 2009 , to take a solo walk , around the mountain Arunachala , in the middle of night , I had the same thought process on the clash of civilization, as I pulled the laptop to write this story , in between the lockdown, where I was again completely alone, and taking a solo walk in my mind in April 2020.
Has the world changed much in-between ?
The origin of both the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, which was the effect of institutionalizing greed and the Global pandemic 2020, which was effect of laboratory made viruses from institution of biological excellence breaking bio safety norms were same.
The origin was human nature.
How could you blame science and nature, for the sins they had not done? Science was always a tool used by human nature, to control the external nature which was out of their control. The difference was always made by the human nature, who decided to use atom bomb to destroy, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to win second world war, instead of using it to build a nuclear power plant in Indian and Africa, where millions of people stays without basic electricity. As Dalai Lama , advised , human being need to learn the culture of compassion from Tibetan Yogis.
As I started walking from Tiruvavnamalai bus stand , in the empty road with closed shops , in a challenging financial situation for masses, due to global financial crisis, in the middle of the night , in an unknown town , with an unknown language and culture , the only thing which I had faith was on compassion of Arunachala , that everything will go right.
As I was writing this piece from my home , with empty roads and closed shops due to lockdown , in a challenging health and financial situation with zero social security for masses due to global pandemic , in the middle of night , charting unknown territories of my mind , the only thing I had faith was on the compassion of Arunachala , that everything will go right.

Stories from Arunachala Diaries : Living a different Reality
Sri Joydip
Tables were all full. There was only one dining space, in the Vaikunthapuram for the people living nearby. So , it was obvious to get full. The place was very close to sea . That’s how most fisherman stayed around this place. The rest of the people were like us, who came from different parts of the world, for spiritual search. There was a small waiting hall , with a narrow bench. And there was already one person waiting there. He greeted me with a handshake, and gave me some more space to sit.
- Simon from Ireland.. You ?
- Joydip
- Are you coming today afternoon to Auroville ?
- Why , Is there anything special ?.
- You don’t know .. Dalai Lama is coming , he would be inaugurating the Tibetian Pavallion
- You love him ?
- I was earlier practicing Buddhism , now I am into different stuff. He was a wise man.
- Yes , he was very practical all the way.
One of the table became now free. We both occupied that, and started taking our food. Simon was a foody kind of person . So, he had added up much fat, which surprisingly made his appearance very gentle and loving . His English was very weak, and when he said something very deep , thoughtful and philosophical , which required long sentences to express , I could not understand him properly. Yet, I decided to go with him to visit Dalai Lama . As , I could still understand his small sentences, which he used for communicating practical requirement.
When we reached Auroville , it was already full. Three thousand people have gathered in Tibetian Pavillon including a lot of School children. Simon was very excited and he looked everything with great energy and excitement
- I attended his program in a US tour. The stadium, was completely filled up. Here also the pavilion was full. Amazing ..Isn’t it ?
- Yes , he was quite popular across the world. But does more crowd makes everything more spiritual ?
- There was a relation between popularity and religion . But spiritual …I don’t know.
Dalai Lama spoke about “Human Unity and Universal responsibility” . His words are very accurate and to the point . He described Tibetan culture as a culture of compassion which the humanity needs.
Next day afternoon , I again started for Tiruvannamalai , and this time , I was alone. I was greeted by empty roads of Tiruvananmalai and occasional chant of “Arunachala Siva” by the small number of people who were doing parikrama in the night.

Stories from Arunachala Diaries : Living a different Reality

- “Is anybody there ?”. A shadow passed away before the spring . Springs were beautiful in Arunacahala . Narrow streams of water surrounded by unknown group of vegetation. Small pathways here and there, surrounded by mist, opening up doors to unknown territories. A similar small narrow pathway was rising up higher, towards the source of the stream. I clearly heard somebody walking upwards, toward the mountain, through this narrow pathway. I started following him. I was just curious, to find another soul in this lonely forest. But that soul was evading me, and not even letting to trace his footsteps.
- Why are you running away?
- What is wrong?
There were no words. Only noises of water were echoing the silence in background. That also, was flowing through rock bed of staircases, dissimilar in size and shape. Just beside this water flow, a narrow lane goes above. I assumed that I could find the origin of the spring, if I followed this narrow lane. Luckily, if I found the person, I would be able to learn more about this dense forest, were I am stuck. There were some small and big cactus plant here and there, scattered and some shrubs surrounding them. There are also very hard rock’s around occasionally hitting my legs mercilessly. I felt I have to slow down.
It is close to evening and there were hardly any chances of finding the path, if I was lost. The only landmark was the spring, and Arunachala Mountain. But there were many small lanes scattered here and there, confusing the direction towards right path.
There was also no person around me where I could ask for some help. An unknown fear started creeping in my mind. What happens if I didn’t find the right path, within next half an hour . The light was becoming low. There can be many wild animals here and there, after I was in the middle of a dense forest.
I gathered all my strength, and shouted for the last time.
“Is anybody here?”
There was just echo of my voice and no response. Silence was pervading all around , and sound of water, was just giving the background music.
After some time, I started hearing strange sound from some other plane . I tried to be more attentive about the sounds. It was sound of knocking the doors. Slowly, it became more clear. Then I found it was coming from my room.
I waked up from the dream of getting lost in the Arunachala forest , and found a great relief . And then opened up the door to find who was it.
- Hare Krishna. I just came today. Next to your room.
- Namastee…
- My name is Prabhu Nitya . I am from US, I teach devotion.
- How can I help you ?
- I want to organize a kirtan in the roof top. I just wanted to know, do I need to take any permission for it.
- Yes there was an attendant in the office below, you could go an ask her.
As I was walking out from my room to Regina’s guest house , for having the Lunch , tall and muscular Prabhu Nitya , raised his hand, to greet me from the half opened door of the room where Lucas used to stay earlier.
- “I got the permission. You can join us if you want in the afternoon.” An women peeped up from the room.
- “My partner Giribala ” A thin western women , with glaring skin and chandan in the forehead , greeted me with a heartwarming smile.
- Ok , I was a writer and teacher all the way, pretty intellectual stuff, and I was not in Bhakti of any type.
- Join us and you will have lot of joy.
- Let’s see
As I walking in the staircase , my mind was reflecting on the amazing speed with which things , people and situation changed here. Everything was like a fluid . The only constant , to me was Mt. Arunachala . Hundred miles from here , sitting quietly and observing the drama of universe unfolding around him.
Or was there a time and space really existing in his scheme of things . How did I felt the presence so close , being so far away ?
In my mind , I intended to go back Tiruvannamalai very soon and shower in Arunachala grace again.

Stories from Arunachala Diaries : Living a different Reality
Sri Joydip
- I could now tell you everything about Bhagvad Gita.
- What did that mean ?
- These few days had transformed me in a way , I never thought I would be .
- Hmm
- No , I was serious .
- You could ask me anything from Bhagvad Gita.
- “Don’t be so excited , your time would come. “ The cynical Lucas , decimated my excitement about transformation, and transition to a new world , as the bus conducter asked for ticket.
In between the green fields , the Bus was moving in an lightening speed, passing by many small temples dedicated to different small and big gods. As it passed Villapurum, Lucas waked up from his afternoon nap, and with a sudden excitement asked
- Had we reached ?
- No , you could take another nap , a long way to cover .
- I had been sleeping for last two days , but still the tiredness had not gone.
- This painkiller made you sleep more , that you forget about the pain when you were asleep.
- “And remember them when you wake up” Lucas added his usual sarcastic tone.
- “ How were you now ?”
- “ Much better , I had to catch the flight by end of this week , hope it would get perfect by then.”
- “Where did you plan to go now?”
- “Back home”
- “ You were going back to US ?”
- “ Yes , I would miss many things , this had been such a trip . The Girivalam , Shanti’s care, the meeting with you, and all those weird sannayasi . “ He breathed in and said.
“ completely contended now”.
- What made you discontented earlier.
- “I just finished my divorce. It has been a long relationship. Jumped from the set and took this break , to come here .” And then looked at the window aimlessly and remarked to himself. “ I needed this “.
Next few days passed like few minutes. It was Ongkie first to visit , both of us, with his big
chin smile asking “ How did you find experience of Arunachala ? “ , and nodding his head in
Indonesian manner exclaiming “Aha”, after every sentences, we shared about our
experience, as if he is tasting the experience, like a cup of tea.
The real taste of course was love of Lucas , which I tasted , while I called the auto to carry
him in Pondicherry bus stand, that he could travel to Chennai airport for catching his flight.
There where number of luggage’s he had to put in the auto, and that could consume his
attention , but it was other way around.
- Remember why did we meet ?
- Yes , your teeth .
- But what about your teeth , you had also some pain …
- Ohh .. that’s normal .. I don’t make so much fuss about it ..
- It’s important and valuable , once it’s gone it will never come back.
- When were you going to come back again ? .
- Not soon , but let me see , I would inform you , we would be in touch ..
- Thanks ...
- “Do send me your book “One World Government” once it’s published “ Lucas hugged me and stepped in the Auto and within a minute vanished from my eyes.
‘One World Government’ was a book , I wrote with Professor Trudy Heller of Wharton Business School and her colleague, for Penguin. The Book was aimed to find out a proper spiritual response to Global recession 2009 another notified global disaster like Global pandemic 2020. Though the book didn’t went into print , as the editor , Heather Adams of Penguin , was not happy with the final draft . So , I could never send the book to Lucas.
However , both Lucas and me had number of discussion, and agreed the reason for global recession was institutionalization greed. Like global recession and global boom cycle , we have also global wellness and global illness like global pandemic cycle . What could have triggered a global pandemic was question we would have contemplated if we have met now. But we never met after that.

Stories from Arunachala Diaries-18
Stories from Arunachala Diaries : Living a different Reality
Sri Joydip
We didn’t find any concrete roads , in our path , to Shanti’s house. It was three storied building . Her father and mother , stayed in the ground floor. She stayed in first floor, and second floor there were small rooms , which they rented it to Guest, who came at the time of festivals in Tiruvannamalai. The building was close to Mannikular Ganesha temple, and a temple with similar name, was also in Pondicherry, close to the main building of Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
Shanti looked like a regular South Indian women with a dark skin , a mark of sacred ash in forehead with never failing smile , and peculiar English ascent blending between English and Tamil, thoroughly challenged by the sharp and aristocrat English expression of Lucas, yet always welcoming his curiosity, like a nurturing mother ,without getting affected with the challenges, she was facing all the way in communicating him.
She made us comfortable, in her house, introduced us to her parents, and then showed us our room in the second floor. The rooms were quite small, but had an attached bathroom, so once you close the door, you had your own small world. We were served some unknown south Indian food, which her mother made for dinner. Lucas didn’t take any food and went straight into bed, after taking the painkiller, and a sleeping pill, prescribed by the doctor.
Shanti accompanied me in dinner , in the small verandah, before entering the rooms in second floor. The food was served in small table, and three small chairs, and sitting there you could have a perfect view of Arunachala . Everything around Shanti’s house, was peaceful, and small in size , yet beautiful and elegant. It seemed that Shanti , had extreme fondness towards dwarfness, as the verandah’s were filled with bonsai plant. We had usual conversation regarding Bengali food , Tamil culture , Spirituality , Religion before we completed the dinner .
As I left the table ,she plucked a flower from her lustrous tresses , with gentle smile ,and give to me , and told me in sign language to keep it, while listening to my “Goodnight” message. While returning to my room , I was thinking , Shanti had all those things, which could grip anybody for long conversations, and she could enchant them even with her broken English , by the help of language, she speaks through deep kajoled eyes .
It is the tiredness of the fourteen kilometer walk in a day, encountering storms , rains and accident, made me complete the dinner, as fast as possible in order, to go bed early, and abruptly complete our conversation, while Shanti wanted to speak more .
Unfortunately, my sleep didn’t last long despite of the fact , that I was dead tired .
I waked up , in the middle of the night, hearing the annoying noise of quarrelling between few man. When I opened my door, I found Ganeshan again , this time in civil dress, engaged with Lucas into an fierce argument.
The aggression of Ganeshan eye, was full of greed, of a predator getting his prey after a long wait. His greed wanted more lubricant and determined to get it from Lucas, but he refused to give any more money. Ganeshan also brought another police officer, who can speak better English , and they were both threatening Lucas.
But what I found next , was more frightening than the argument between Lucas and Ganeshan. The lustrous tresses of Shanti , was no longer carrying any flower and the gentle unfailing smile , was replaced by fierce and violent look, with a long bamboo stick in her hand, as same as her height.
As both of them hit Lucas , Shanti started moving the bamboo stick, all across her body . Shanti was moving the stick so fast in the small verandah where we had dinner , in such method and grace , four of us become paralyzed , not able to move an inch. Terrror striked in the face of Ganeshan, and his colleague. However , they resisted but got soon defeated, as they seemed too had never seen Shanti like this. They quickly got down in there Jip. The driver had already started the jip sensing trouble, and fled.
Lucas slowly started taking baby steps to reach his bed, and with a curious look asked Shanti.
- “ What was that , where did you learned this ?”
- “ It was Silambam , an ancient marial art of Tamilnadu which taught by Siddhar Agastya Muni some three thousand ago “. Slowly and gently , Shanti was returning back to her original loving personality, then the fierce form she showed us.
- “Remember we went to Agastya Ashram in Girivalam Road”. I added.
- “I actually use to practice Bharatnatyam , a traditional dance form here . My teacher asked also to practice Silambam for the developing footwork and the fitness of the body for improving the dance. But I loved the Silambam practice so much, that I decided not only to devote my time on this practice, but also to teach other women for self defense. Now , I am able to defend man too.” Shanti laughed while teasing Lucas, after completing her sentence in broken english. Lucas was embarrassed and his face turned red.
- “That’s ultimate feminist statement . You had really done a role reversal.” I cheered up for Shanti. But she seemed to be not impressed on that.
- “I am not a feminist . I don’t support oppression of women by man , and at the same time, I don’t support oppression of man by women or other man too”.

Stories from Arunachala Diaries-17

After the storm we could not guess that there was a new storm waiting for us . Lucas was already indecisive that whether , it was a good choice to leave for Pondicherry or stay back in Tiruvannamalai for another day. Because the traces of the storm was still there , even though there was non- existence of violent winds , which are terrorizing our skins. But there were sudden splash of wind gust which is misbalancing us between the debris’s which are scattered here and there, across the road.
Suddenly Lucas started shouting in pain .
When I tried to figure out what happened, I found a window glass which probably was blown by wind from somewhere , with sharp ends , had entered in Lucas right leg and it’s hanging there , while blood is flowing profusely.
He needs an urgent medical care , and all the shops around were closed which can give some first aid .
In a while a police man arrived in a enfield bullet bike , who was patrolling , to find out the aftermath of the storm. I rushed to him.
- “Can we get a ambulance ? He needs an Urgent attention “
The Policeman looked like a regular time guy , just that he had a fancy mouthstache. However , his interest was more to find out the details of Lucas , than to give him Urgent medical attention he requires.
- “ Does he had a passport and visa ?” . I quickly took the bag from his shoulder and started searching whether it was available.
- “ Right Pocket.. Right Pocket” Lucas told me in a trembling voice.
- “See .. he had it , why don’t we first go to the hospital ?”
- “ I need to see it first” . Looking at the determination of the Policeman voice , I searched the right pocket and find all the travel documents and gave it to policeman. He checked it for sometime, and then returned back after profusely matching the photograph of Lucas with the real face.
- “Can we make it fast , he was bleeding” . I was getting stressed as he asked a peculiar question .
- “How much money does he had ?“
- “Why” I asked.
- “I can take you the residence of a nearby Orthopedic surgeon . His house and chamber is in same place, in Big Temple Road. But it would require a lot of money."
- “ My purse is in left pocket” – Lucas again shouted with a trembling voice.
The Policeman drove us to the chamber of the Orthopedic surgeon who seem to be a great follower of Mother and Sri Aurobindo , with their photos hanging everywhere in the chamber. He had a very efficient women assistant , who did all the dressing to the Lucas injury and put the bandage.
- “Ganeshan where did you get them ?
- “Just near the Ganesha temple” the policeman replied . The surgeon was very quiet and humble . He wrote some medicine in the prescription, and probably realized that we would not get them today. So, he handed over to his assistant.
- “ Shanti , please check the stock , we might have this medicines , if we had please give it to him” . Shanti quickly went into a room and brought back the medicines, while Ganeshan kept looking on Shanti in a very awkward way.
- “ Thank you doctor” . Lucas has already started healing and he was taking baby steps even with the bandage.
- “ Where are you from ? “
- “ Pondicherry”
- “ Your native place in Pondicherry”
- “ No , I am in Bengal and he is from France , he stays in US these days.”
- “ Doctor , can we get back to Pondy today”.
- “ No , you need to take two days rest . The injury is deep”. The doctor thundered.
- “ But we don’t have place to stay here”.
- “ Shanti .. can you help ?” For a fraction of second, the beautiful smile in short heighted Shanti vanished. After a moment of shyness and hesitation , she nod her head
- “You can stay for two days in my house , it’s nearby “
- “ Thank you “
- “Doctor what are you charges”
- “ No charges , you are devotee of Arunachala , have come to see Arunachala from such distance . It is our job to serve you “. Lucas looked at Ganeshan and he clearly seemed irritated with the hospitality of both the doctor and his assistant.
- “ I will leave now “ Ganeshan angrily remarked.
- “ Thank you also for your lift “ . Lucas handed over some cash to Ganeshan , without any hesitation , he took the cash and kept it in his pocket.
- “ Usually I take more in emergency cases . But it is ok “ . Lucas handed over some more money to Ganeshan. As he was getting ready to start some new requisition, Shanti was irritated and angry . She raised his eyebrows , and her regular smiling face was hidden , behind a very powerful and strong look.
- - “ We should leave now , otherwise storm could return again”.
Lucas was back to his original self and he started curiously looking at Shanti , as if he had got another object of deeper study.
Shanti also asked us to follow her in her way to home. And before starting towards her home , in a very a devoted way she also chanted “Arunachala Shiva , Arunachala Shiva” .
