There are times that I have been sidelined for months. I think for me the accountability network that I set up was very important. I had sent out rough drafts to a lot of people. That served as a partial forcing function. Putting up pictures of the Tuskegee Airmen, going to Tuskegee Airmen chapter meetings to see living Tuskegee Airmen, pushed me because they were the partial inspiration for this book. Finally there was sense of urgency that I felt was divinely inspired and I prayed for the push that I needed to respond to the divine urgency that I felt within. A few practical notes: 1) I locked myself away sometime 12-14 hours at a time, turned off the phone, sent word to my family that I wasn't taking calls because I was writing a book, 2) I stopped trying to write a bit then polish a bit, just write--polish and edit later, just create and let it flow. These practical tips from my editor Latoya Rosario(less)

I knew that what I wrote would resonate with some people but there are people who have been inspired by this book that I had put "outside" the circle of those that I thought would be interested in this type of book. I have inspired several family members and one coworker to begin writing. I also have inspired a few people to help promote the special cause that I included in my book: getting Colonel Charles E. McGee retroactively promoted to Brigadier General. (less)

Ta-Nehisi Coates
“But race is the child of racism, not the father. And the process of naming “the people” has never been a matter of genealogy and physiognomy so much as one of hierarchy. Difference in hue and hair is old. But the belief in the preeminence of hue and hair, the notion that these factors can correctly organize a society and that they signify deeper attributes, which are indelible—this is the new idea at the heart of these new people who have been brought up hopelessly, tragically, deceitfully, to believe that they are white.”
Ta-Nehisi Coates, Between the World and Me

Ta-Nehisi Coates
“Racism is not merely a simplistic hatred. It is, more often, broad sympathy toward some and broader skepticism toward others.”
Ta-Nehisi Coates, We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy

Ta-Nehisi Coates
“Every Trump voter is certainly not a white supremacist, just as every white person in the Jim Crow South was not a white supremacist. But every Trump voter felt it was acceptable to hand the fate of the country over to one.”
Ta-Nehisi Coates, We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy

Ta-Nehisi Coates
“At the onset of the Civil War, our stolen bodies were worth four billion dollars, more than all of American industry, all of American railroads, workshops, and factories combined, and the prime product rendered by our stolen bodies—cotton—was America’s primary export.”
Ta-Nehisi Coates, Between the World and Me

Ta-Nehisi Coates
“Fully 60 percent of all young black men who drop out of high school will go to jail. This should disgrace the country. But it does not,”
