Stephen Vaughn is an alien living, writing, and making music with the humans who are all unaware of his alienness. As a small green child he developed a love of creating elaborate stories while he played, first with action figures, then with swords and wizard staffs in his backyard. Unbeknownst to him or the rest of his family, also aliens living and conspiring midst the human populace, this early love of storytelling turned into full blown obsession with writing. The works of humans such as Cormac McCarthy, Chuck Palahniuk, Mark Z. Danielewski, Stephen King, and William Peter Blatty informed in him a strange mixture of wanting to be a popular writer, but also having a penchant for the weird, surreal, abstract, and down right odd with a lit ...more

Usually if I have writers block it' because I'm not inspired. If not then it's often due to being burned out on whatever I'm writing.

People always tell you to just write constantly, but sometimes the best thing you can do for your story is to stop and walk away for a few days. (less)

Alan Moore's research and depth of characterization of William Gull easily makes him the greatest villain ever. Fitting for Jack the Ripper. But this book is so much more.

“How do you write a memory? For that matter, what is a memory? A remembrance, a dream of the past that floats into the present on occasion? What are memories? Are they illusion? For if memory is illusion, then how can we be sure of what is real? Illusions are fabricated, sometimes they are an accident, sometimes they are pure deception, and how do we tell the difference? Do you start with the person? Do you start with the idea? How can you begin with either if you can’t decide on one? How can you write a memory if you don’t even know what it is? How do you create something that has never before been created? If we don’t know what our memories are, do we know what the present is? Do we know what the future holds? If we don’t know what memories are then do we know what the past was? And if we question what we know, how can we be sure of anything? How can we be sure what’s currently happening is real, and not a vivid memory being relived over and over in painful remembrance?”

“They were together, and that was all that mattered. The food, the house, the cars, the money, the power, all inconsequential. She would tear it all down herself with her bare hands if she had to, because her family was alive, well, and surrounding her in love. It was how it should have been that night, and it was the last thing Abigail thought or saw in her minds eye as she faded off into the oblivion and unknown of death.”

“Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now you begin to understand me.”
George Orwell, 1984

“Once upon a time, I dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was myself. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man.”
Zhuangzi, The Butterfly as Companion: Meditations on the First Three Chapters of the Chuang Tzu
