When I was a teenager, there were so few books available of the kind that I wanted to read, that I ended up having to write them for myself. There just aren't enough bolshy, kickass, trouble-magnet heroines out there! Nor novels that delve deeply into the psyche and development of the characters without sacrificing plot, tension and action.

I've worked in forensic psychiatry in a secure unit, in a psycho-therapeutic community for emotionally disturbed children, in hospice care, in a further education college for learning disabled young adults, been involved in helping survivors of sexual abuse and helped to set up a trauma counselling centre for Chechnyan refugees. You can find me pounding the fells of Northern England, mountaineering, climbing, ski touring, canoeing, or sailing off the west coast of Scotland - and occasionally I even manage to find some time to write or do some real work!

My latest book 'All On a Pewter Sea' is a contemporary romantic suspense story set in the Outer Hebrides where we spend much of every summer on our boat. With a Gaelic-speaking heroine, a nautical theme, romance and a touch of jeopardy.

My 'Not Quite Eden' series is a contemporary, action-packed, coming-of-age romance with a strong female lead and a wanna-be alpha male. A light-hearted, fast-paced set of stories following one kickass young woman as she tries to get ahead in a traditionally male role, achieve her dream job and find her perfect man.

E-Books 1 and 5 of the Not Quite Eden series are free on the first of every month and you are welcome to pass that message on...but please consider leaving a review - authors love to hear from their readers, and reviews genuinely help new readers to judge whether the series is going to be the right fit for their personality and whether they dare risk taking the plunge. The key to my own book-reviewing system is this:

If you understand that for me, Hilary Mantel’s Thomas Cromwell trilogy is ten stars, and Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is a solid seven, then you will realise that when I award 5 stars, all it means is that it is a good engaging read, well-written, and I enjoyed it.
I have two different rating scales – one for conventionally published and the other for independently published.
If a book is conventionally published, I expect it to be good. Afterall, it is supposed to have gone through the hands of agents, editors, and proof-readers. Sadly, you’d think that would guarantee quality. Alas, there is a huge pile of money-spinning trash out there that is depressingly bad. So I tell the unremitting truth about conventionally published books as I see it. Afterall, why not? The author, editor and publisher never bother reading our reviews, so we are writing them for the benefit and advice of our fellow readers.
I am more lenient in my reviews of independently published authors. To be honest, if it rates less than three stars with me, I just quietly drop it. I don’t see any mileage in humiliating and upsetting some poor person who has put a lot of love and time into their creation and will be nervously reading every review posted. Unfortunately, love and time doesn’t necessarily equal the possession of skill or guarantee the outcome being a quality book. However I try to highlight the positive and be polite or constructive about where the book falls short. I tend to hope that the author will have some good friends whom they trust to give them advice about how to improve their work. I don’t consider that my role.

The training experiment that made me leave my job...

This is a weird one.

The final straw that caused me to give in my notice shortly afterwards.

When working in a psychotherapeutic community for children, we were instructed to attend a staff training event. As we arrived at the door, the hundred or so attendees were assessed and sent into one of two rooms. In the room I was sent into, we were ordered to stand facing the wall and not speak to anyone.
