Quickly...I was born and raised in California, but now live in South Carolina with my wife and our animals. I am neither a liberal nor a conservative. In fact, I despise politics. I think of myself as an artist, and not as a journalist. I've been influenced by Milton Friedman, Frank Lloyd Wright, Hunter S Thompson, Douglas Adams, Salvador Dali, MC Escher, JS Bach, Keith Jarrett, Vincent Price, Tom Waits, and many others. I like to smoke cigars and drink lots of coffee. And I do love to write. Lock me in a room with a box of cigars, a coffee maker, and a computer, and I will do just fine. Then in college I picked up a copy of Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail from the book rack at the grocery store, and I took it back to my dorm room to read it. I was mesmerized from the first page to the last, and for this reason I would have to say Hunter S Thompson is my favorite author. I have grown up a lot since those days, and now his books seem sort of myopic and immature to me. But he is the one who first got me interested in reading and writing. (less)

Dust of the Earth

Coming soon! Here are the opening words of my upcoming book, Dust of the Earth:

"I was named Martin. I had no last name, and I had just turned one year old. I was made of the dust of the earth, of steel, glass, silica sand, iron ore, gold, bauxite, copper, lead, and plastics. I was a living being. Electricity ran through my arteries and veins, and fans and air conditioners kept me cool. I could rea Read more of this blog post »

“One of the jokes was about a male human who walked into a bar with a loaded gun in his hand. He shouted to the patrons, “Which one of you dirty dogs has been sleeping with my wife? I swear I’m going to shoot you dead!” An old-timer at the bar turned around and said, “You should go home, son. You haven’t got enough bullets in that gun.”
Mark Lages, Mr. Booker’s Summer Vacation

“I can think of nothing more personal than a child, a child who was made from a part of you and a part of your lover.”
Mark Lages, Robinson’s Dream

“For sure there is nothing in the world like being a mother.”

“Great hearts, my dear master, should be patient in misfortune as well as joyful in prosperity. And this I judge from myself. For if I was merry when I was Governor now that I’m a squire on foot I’m not sad, for I’ve heard tell that Fortune, as they call her, is a drunken and capricious woman and, worse still, blind; and so she doesn’t see what she’s doing, and doesn’t know whom she is casting down or raising up.”
Cervantes

Milton Berle

“I don't need a friend who changes when I change and who nods when I nod; my shadow does that much better.”
Plutarch
