Deeply moving. Haunting. I felt like I’d been plopped in a neighborhood full of interesting/flawed characters and someone who knows everyone well was sitting next to me, filling in on the details. I will think about the story Black Cobras for a long ...more

This is the second book I’ve read by Sigurdardottir. Eerie. Atmospheric. Slow burn. Two timelines that intersect in a clever way. The choice of “villains” and their motivations is unexpected.

Wonderful. Funny. Heartbreaking. I liked the protagonist and her frantic energy and gaze of the world very much. I also liked the ending but maybe the author could have spent more time on the last chapter.

Original and inventive. Also the kind of book that teaches you a whole bunch of stuff by referencing other short stories, essays, movies, music, fairy tales, and true crime.

“Now, of course, you can’t walk in any Indian city without running into a café selling everything from mochas to cappuccinos to that monstrosity known unironically as chai latte containing ingredients such as maple syrup and vanilla extract. Either commit to a chai or to a coffee, people. What kind of daily indecisiveness do you battle that you must find ways to marry the two?”

“If you didn’t consider our faces, hair, language, food, and about fifty other categories, Ha-Yun and I could have been twins! No wonder Kathy got confused.”
