So much to learn and so difficult to go down the rabbit hole to find the facts to complement the history. But right now Taking Paris is my favorite book. The work was joyful and the research was immersive. (less)

Woke up late this morning. Scratchy throat. Feeling rundown but not sick. Just needed an aerobic easy day, in training parlance. I define that to my runners as a pace slow enough to facilitate recovery. The dogs needed to go out and the house was too quiet. So rather than putter around in the silence I reached for the remote. The Long Run by Martin Dugard
"What a wonderful book! Yes, it’s a microhistory of the marathon and running in the U.S. but Dugard’s voice is delightful. It feels as if you are keeping pace across 26.2 miles with him telling you stories as you keep pace. The facts are illuminating " Read more of this review »

“To be a runner is to learn continual life lessons. To be a coach is not just to teach these lessons but also to feel them in the core of your marrow. The very act of surpassing personal limits in training and racing will bend the mind and body toward a higher purpose for the rest of my runners' lives. Settling for mediocrity-settling instead of pushing-those who learn to be the best version of themselves know the secret to a full life.”

“The missionaries ate the local food. Sometimes, as in the case of one New Zealand tribe whose favorite recipe called for Anglicans, the locals ate the missionaries.”

Polls

This poll is for the 'first' quarterly Non-fiction selection in our BT group. We had an outstanding response in nominations, with even more members holding off for the next quarter. I can only hope to see a book discussion that is half as lively.

Should we have a tie, there will be a very short 3 day additional poll to select one winner this quarter. However, if this non-fiction selection stays this popular - there could be multiple winners in the future. Time and thread participation will tell...
