Deepa Thomas was born and raised in New Delhi. She founded Deepa Textiles, a $10-million enterprise that won twenty-three design awards. In 2010, she embraced a newfound passion in cooking. Her debut, Deepa’s Secrets, is a stunningly visual cookbook of flavorful and healing recipes — interlaced with vivid stories of her Indian upbringing and its influence on her American life. Ms. Thomas will donate all her royalties of Deepa’s Secrets to FoodCorps, a nonprofit that connects children to healthy food in American schools. She lives with her husband, not far from her two sons, in the Nob Hill section of San Francisco.

A serendipitous conversation I had with my new GP, Dr. Bobby Baron—a well-known weight loss expert—about how to get rid of an extra twenty pounds, surprised me. Exercise, sure, portion-control, of course, but the glycemic index, which measures how foods impact blood sugar levels, was key. I knew very little about it but I learned that rice and bread make blood sugar spike. For years my husband, Thampy, managed his Type 2 diabetes with insulin injections, but now I was curious to see what a modified diet could do. I experimented by cooking different versions of my favorite dishes, removing many carbs. Five days off rice and bread, Thampy forgets his shot, and his blood sugar monitor shows his levels are fine. He skips the shot and consults the monitor the next day. Again, his levels were good. He hasn’t given himself a shot since. At my next appointment with Dr. Baron, I’d lost twenty pounds. When I tell Dr. Baron that I’m going to write a fan letter to Arthur Agatston, the author of the GI book, he suggests I write my own book. Over the next six months, I began getting recipe requests from dinner guests, my sons, their friends, and began to take the idea very seriously. If there had been a book like this for us, maybe Thampy would’ve sidestepped the onset of Type 2 diabetes altogether, and I wouldn’t have gained so much weight!(less)
