I was raised in Southern California, and devoted myself to rock climbing and ski racing. I completed a double-major in philosophy and English at USC in 1978; an M.F. A. in writing from Johns Hopkins University in 1981. In 1983 I withdrew from the Ph.D. program at Yale, unable to resist a job offer to become an expedition research director for a documentary film company in Indonesia, charged to locate primitive tribal groups in mountain areas difficult of access. This immersion led to learning Dutch, to an interest in the colonial period, and to many research trips to The Netherlands.
