Akif Kichloo is a Poet, Doctor of Medicine by profession, and Author of three full length poetry collections: Falling Through Love (Andrews Mcmeel Publishing, 2019), Poems That Lose (Read Out Loud Publishing, 2017) & The Feeling May Remain (Read Out Loud Publishing, 2016). 1) The quiet time isn't your writing time. It's rather when the wolves in your head start howling to the demons of your fate. Scared and oftentimes full of respite. It is not your duty to bring change but if you must, I hope you bring truth to the table as you slit the turkeys throat before roasting it with unsalted butter and vegetable broth. Chose your ingredients slowly. Test them before you put in your pepper and your salt, for sugar might not go with that roasted turkey you are trying to make. Thank you has to be said in a variety of different ways. Appreciation has to be reciprocated with appropriate words.

2) Write of what you know, where you have been, what all you saw when you were there, and what you inferred from it all.

3) You are not obligated to inspire, but if the mosaic of cynicism lives in your being, shatter it into pieces of glass that glint of nothing but the truth.

4) When you think of bad mouthing a fellow writer, I would say keep it to yourself, and rather use it to dig deep into your own soul. Writers are sensitive beings. They get offended easily. Mostly because they have seen a lot. They have gone through a maze set on fire, and they not only have figured their way out but also have survived. They have burns all over their bodies and I am sure, so do you. Always remember that. You have to understand your own ache in order to remember what pain they are going through. Be empathetic. Diligent in your quest.

5) Sometimes the verity won't come through when you bleed ink onto these white sheets, and sometimes you wouldn't want to share your truth for the fear of being alone in feeling what you feel. Share it any way. If not with the world, then at least to your own self, and read it over and over until you believe in what you wrote.

6) Your truth will change over time. Please don't fight that change.

7) With experience you shall be cursed with the knowledge of knowing exactly what to write for people to like what you wrote. Don't always consider it a blessing. Find the courage to bring your pen to a halt right at that instant and look out your window. There are billions living on this blue marble we call earth and most of them are fast asleep as you sit down to do this. It is not you who chose the pen, it is rather the pen which chose you. That is why you are still awake, hearing the crickets chirp as you take notes at the edges of your writing pad.

Be responsible with your words. There are people who would believe you and that is a burden you better be aware of.

8) Time is the best editor.

9) Choose your words wisely. Even though you might think they are just words, understand that they have the power to bring nations up or tear them down to the ground.
