My findings this week forgo the usual coffee and pizza shops. Instead, the focus is on comfort foods by way of India, Vietnam, Georgia, Korea, the Philippines, U.K., Australia, and Quebec. In other words, just what these autumn days call for.

Shwa’s The Bollywood Tacos is all about “Indian-inspired Mexican street food.” Picture Indian dishes such as Butter Chicken, Curry Lamb, and Chana Masala doled out in tacos, burritos, nachos, bowls and poutine. See for yourself at their new digs at College and Bathurst (422 College St.), previously home to Sheherzade Persian Grill.
Broken Rice (613 Yonge St.) is serving “real Vietnamese comfort food” at Yonge near Gloucester. Grand opening celebrations take place Saturday.
Following the announcement of the closure of the shop in Parkdale, Dipped Donuts is joining the lineup at the historic St Lawrence Market. Until construction is completed, they’ll be operating a pop-up onsite (93 Front St. E., Lower Level, Unit B19) Fridays to Sundays.

If your mantra is ‘Keto, not Cheetos,” this low-carb restaurant and bakery is for you. Grand opening for Ketodelia (1772 Danforth Ave.) is tomorrow east of Coxwell. This marks the brand’s third gluten-free, low-carb destination - the first remains at Yonge and Lawrence, with a second in Baby Point, now closed.
Brekkie and brunch are happening steps from Trinity Bellwoods Park at Motto Toronto (764 Queen St. W.) in what was previously Hanky Panky, a store lined with lingerie and sex toys.
North York’s Nopo Korean Bistro at Yonge and Finch (5523 Yonge St.) celebrates grand opening today. What to expect? Cozy Korean fare - tteokbokki, ddukbul - and cocktails including matcha and soju-based sippers, served in a contemporary setting.
The Pie Commission has held it down in Etobicoke for six years at 927 The Queensway. While that addy has come to a close, one five minutes away (919 Oxford St.) is on the quick approach, loaded with their signature savoury meat and veg pies. Grand opening is tomorrow.
Filipino fry chain Potato Corner claims to have “world's best flavoured french fries." Check it out for yourself at the new site at Scarborough Town Centre (300 Borough Dr. Lower Level). Did you know? Following a successful pop-up at Square One (100 City Centre Dr.) in Summer 2024, a permanent outpost launched last fall.
Speaking of Square One, Rock’N Deli, home of halal smoked meat sandos and smash burgers, has moved into the Mississauga mall (100 City Centre Dr., Level 1, Food Central). TR Quick Backstory: The first Toronto branch of the Quebec chain commenced operations at CF Shops at Don Mills (32 Clock Tower Rd.) Spring 2019. A few more followed over the years: Later in 2019 on St. Clair West and in 2020, Mississauga’s Dixie Road - all since closed. According to their website, Square One is currently the sole location in the province.
Soy Boys’ second plant-based burger joint debuts today. Head to Leslieville east of Pape (1056 Queen St. E.) where Samaira's Kitchen stood until recently. Did you know? SB first landed in The Village in 2022.
The activity on King West continues, this time with a new nightclub. From the folks that brought you Early Mercy comes Sunrise Forgives (545 King St. W.) dropping today across the street from EM’s long-running spot, in the space that was formerly Enoteca Sociale’s lively counterpart, Ristorante Sociale. Drinks and dancing are in effect Thursdays to Saturdays.

After being on the market for a long stretch, news of Northern Maverick Brewing Co’s (115 Bathurst St.) quiet closure made the rounds this week. The extensive space, a 11,000 sq. ft. facility, featured a 10-hectolitre brewhouse with eight 20-HL fermenters, 400-seat restaurant, a bar and retail store. This follows a number of local brewery closures of late including The Aviary Brewpub/Longslice Brewery, Laylow (Note: While their digs on College might be gone, Laylow’s brews and vibes are still happening around town), and Saulter Street Brewery, to name just a few.TR Trivia: NMB started out with chef Mark Cutrara in the kitchen, and once hosted the Suits crew for a bash.

Here’s the very latest:
OPEN
Following a debut in Scarborough earlier this year, South Indian resto Aaha Truly South touches down at Dundas and St. Patrick (250 Dundas St. W.) - but you knew that already. Update: Doors open today.
Aiyla Turkish Cuisine lands in Vaughan (10385 Weston Rd., Unit 7B) with halal Turkish and Mediterranean fare. Think mezes, salads, wood-fired pide, grilled meat and more. TR Trivia: It replaces another Turkish concept. Details below.
Ballers Restaurant & Bar (560 Queen St. W.), a recent arrival to Queen and Bathurst in what was a Wine Rack (making it a bottle shop of a different variety), promises to be “your ultimate destination for great food, sports, and good vibes!”
Bloomer’s, home of vegan treats and eats, left Unit 107A in Bayview Village (2901 Bayview Ave.) ever so briefly. Find them in their new setup nearby (Unit 113A).
The Coffee began its Toronto journey on King West earlier this year, then added Front St. in the spring. Discover the third at the edge of Yorkville (150 Bloor St. W.). And stay tuned. At least two more on the way: The Junction (2720 Dundas St. W., Unit 1) and Yonge & Eglinton (8 Eglinton Ave. E.) .
DiVino Restaurant & Bar (46 Blue Jays Way) has settled in the Entertainment District, offering an array of “handcrafted pizzas, housemade pastas and creative cocktails” in what was famously Wahlburgers’ former stomping grounds.
Fahmee Bakery has been through it over the years, but good news: FB’s legendary patties, coco bread, and other stellar grub are back in Scarborough (119 Montezuma Trail) as of Saturday at noon. See you there.
A few doors over from ATS, Matcha Matcha brings its signature sipper to Dundas and McCaul (294 Dundas St. W.). Doors open tomorrow.
I told you Harbord Village was a hotspot. Nice Slice (196 Borden St.) takes over the corner that held Think. It Pensa Italiano’s until recently, with hot ‘za - slices and whole pies - and cold drinks.
Pape and Danforth has had a time of it lately with all the comings, goings, and fire. Pizza Bono (675 Danforth Ave.) infuses the strip with “craft artisan pizzas with the freshest ingredients.”
Ratelier isn’t your average coffee shop. It brings together “perfume-making workshops, curated art, and specialty coffee experiences” under one roof nestled next to Trinity Bellwoods Park (9 Trinity Park Lane) .
SMEG’s flagship just dropped at Yonge and Bloor (2 Bloor St. W.). The first showroom for the brand in Canada is filled with its iconic appliances large and small from fridges to toasters, a full kitchen for classes and events, and the “world’s first” on-site SMEG Café serving “artisanal beverages.”
Bún, bahn mi, pho and other Vietnamese essentials are happening at Bay and Bloor. Enjoy 20 per cent off during grand opening of Viet Hut Express (25 Charles St. W.) in the space previously occupied by Rabba Fine Foods, now down the block (695 Bay St.)
555 Boat Noodles debuted downtown around this time last year. North York, it’s your turn to get in on their signature Thai noods, on Yonge below Finch (5308 Yonge St.).
CLOSED
The first Canadian franchise of popular fast casual American pizza chain Blaze Pizza backed by famous investors including LeBron James and Maria Shriver has concluded service almost exactly ten years after its debut. The Yonge and Dundas (10 Dundas St. E.) has closed, and there was another downtown on John for a spell. The one at Yonge Sheppard Centre (4841 Yonge St.) is still standing.
Blue Claw Lobster Shack’s Bay and Bloor digs (25 Charles St. W.) didn’t last long. To get your crustacean on, visit their location at The Well’s food court Wellington Market (486 Front St. W., Lower Level).
The big restaurant closures on King West are far from over, including more at King & Portland. Following my reports in recent months on varying degrees of shutdowns in the vicinity - Buca, Dasha, Kissa, Vela - I’ve got not just one or two, but THREE establishments to add to the list, two of which received recent nods from Michelin:
1. Lapinou (642 King St. W., Suite 102), the “neo-bistro inspired by regional French flavours and local terroir met with modern culinary expertise” by Scale Hospitality has come to an abrupt end. On the Michelin Recommended lineup from 2022-2024, it’s been marked ‘Permanently Closed’ on Google.
2. A few doors east, Nihari Inn’s downtown location (628 King St. W.) has been cleared out. An outpost of the halal Pakistani resto remains in Mississauga (3525 Platinum Dr., Unit 104).
3. Around the corner on Portland, Chica Snack Bar (75 Portland St.), which over the years has also gone by Bar Chica and Chica, and has been a Michelin Recommended destination since the inaugural 2022 guide all the way up to and including the 2025 edition released just a few weeks ago, is currently closed and undergoing a revamp. Expect a new concept in its place soon.
p.s. Of course if you followed Toronto Restaurants on Instagram, you would've been the first in on the breaking news. Psst. That’s not all: It appears Scale Hospitality, the Toronto-based company behind both Chica and Lapinou, is also changing things up. It currently lists 14 restaurants as “Past Projects” on its website while many remain open: Boardwalk Café, Byblos, Chica, Figo, GG’s, Le Sélect Bistro - not part of their portfolio anymore as I first reported on my podcast back in March, Maxime’s, Miller Tavern, Patria - now closed, relaunched as Beso by Patria last spring, Pink Sky - closed earlier this year and relaunched as vinyl-centric eatery Vinny this past summer, event venue Storys, Toronto Beach Club - now seasonal/turned into an event space until the warmer weather arrives, Toronto’s oldest bar The Wheatsheaf Tavern, in addition to Frenchy Bar & Brasserie. Lapinou is missing from the bunch. (Note: Select restaurants were also part of the Ink Entertainment portfolio. Current ones include Beso, Byblos, Figo and Storys.) The company founded by Hanif Harji and Terry Tsianos over a decade ago was named Regional Company of the Year by Food Service & Hospitality Magazine last year, which at that time included renowned chef Antonio Park’s eponymous restaurant, AP, now closed (I broke the news in March) - replaced by Scale’s Middle Eastern concept Mar'aa Yorkville this past summer, The Fortunate Fox, Miss Likklemore’s, and Black Pearl, later swapped out for The Pearl, amongst its destinations. In May, Harji, along with hotelier Jason Pomeranc, opened Casamara and Reynold’s inside the new Sixty DC Hotel in Washington, D.C. with Toronto’s own Zachary Albertsen holding down the position of Executive Chef, “marking Scale Hospitality’s highly anticipated entrance into the DC dining scene,” as per The Washington Lobbyist. Back on Canadian turf, The Trillum, an online publication specializing in ”in-depth coverage of politics and policy-making in Ontario,” published an article last month regarding government funding the company reportedly received.
Following a fire at Pape and Danforth and Pape last week, fire broke out at another east side eatery: Leslieville’s popular brunch destination since 2020, Pasaj. Doors are temporarily closed. In the meantime, you can visit their other venture, bakery and cafe Simit & Chai: steps from the restaurant on Queen, on King West, and in the Entertainment District that shared an addy with their restaurant Barba that came on the scene last year and has since closed.
After a recent fire, Rally Sports Bar (1660 O'Connor Dr.) has been marked ‘Permanently Closed’ on Google.

Fay Olson, a part of the Toronto jazz community for decades, died.
Latest food recalls: Certain Raw Pistachios recalled due to Salmonella, Maison Gabriel Coulet Roquefort - La Cave recalled due to Listeria monocytogenes, Pistachio bar recalled due to Salmonella, Various sauces and lasagnas recalled due to undeclared mustard.

Fangio Trattoria (1111 Queen St. E.) takes over Ascari’s recently shuttered digs in Leslieville. As with its predecessor, it’s inspired by a race car driver with ties to Italy - this time around, Juan Manuel Fangio - and a menu of similar vibe and offerings - expect an Argentinian flair.
After unveiling a store at Dundas and Bay this summer, Taiwanese bubble tea shop FiftyLan joins the Entertainment District at Queen and John (311A Queen St. W.).
Today marks the launch of Honey Soul Food’s highly anticipated venture downtown, The Hive by Honey Soul Food (907 Dundas St. W.). Doors open at 5pm.
Introducing Chinatown’s newest addition: Jasmine Kitchen (434 Dundas St. W.), complete with a wide array of Asian grub including dumplings, casseroles, chow mein, rice bowls (Mapo Tofu, Braised Pork Knuckles, General Tso Chicken) and featured fare such as Uyghur Bone-in Chicken and Hot & Spicy Dry Pot Shrimp.
The first Canadian outpost of Kajiken in North York (4850 Yonge St.) is garnering a lot of attention. No wonder. The Japanese chain specializing in abura soba - aka “soupless” ramen - earned a Michelin recommendation for its San Mateo, California location. TR Pro Tip: Expect lineups.
Punch pulls into Le Germain Hôtel Toronto Mercer (30 Mercer St.) with British Indian dishes. In the kitchen: Executive chef Mandar Kulkarni, whom you might know from his extensive experience across award-winning Toronto kitchens including Michelin-starred Don Alfonso 1890.
The space for the latest Ramona’s Kitchen in Leslieville (913 Queen St. E.) was still under wraps when I broke the story re: the previous occupant. The all-day eatery is now open for business.
Since its arrival north of the border, I’ve been tracking Shake Shack’s every move. Newsflash: The Yonge and Eg branch (40 Eglinton Ave. E.) kicks off tomorrow at 11am with a free burger for the first 100 in line. Stay tuned. More are underway.

Coffee, baked pastries and pugilist pursuits? United Coffee Shop, a slip of a joint inside United Boxing Club (1034 Bloor St. W.), is a viiiibe.
ISO authentic Sichuan-style hot pot? Head to 3rd Mom Hot Pot’s new spot downtown (261 Spadina Ave.).
CLOSED
BanBuDian Bistro Restaurant set down roots in Chinatown (261 Spadina Ave., Upper Level) not long ago. BBD’s Richmond Hill site (505 Highway 7, Unit 68) also ceased operations.
After a five year run, a popular vegan bakery and cafe wrapped things up at Bayview Village (2901 Bayview Ave., Unit 107A) on Sunday. Luckily, Bloomer’s is merely moving within the mall, and four locations remain in Toronto/GTA. Stay tuned for opening dates.
Next door to recently shuttered Black Pot Lounge & Restaurant, the footprint that was newly appointed Chef's Hotspot (802 Danforth Ave.) - a ”Nigerian food haven” filled with Assun Jollof Rice, Catfish Peppersoya and Efo Riro - has been cleared out.
It’s said that two is better than one, but a pair of concepts under one roof near Donlands (915 Danforth Ave) - Chachu’s, home of Pakistani fusion fare, and Uncle Sal’s Hot Chicken and Ribs - is no more.
Dundas Spring Garden served Cantonese fare in the heart of Chinatown (434 Dundas St. W.) for over a decade.
Keeping tabs on the revolving door of businesses at one particular building east of Pape (675 Danforth Ave.) has been time-consuming to say the least: Grub Shack arrived in 2023. Prior to GS, the addy welcomed Boomerang Sandwich, Camel Restaurant and Mishwar. Will forthcoming Pizza Bono turn the tide? Watch this space.
If it feels like Heritage Cafe & Kitchen (368 Queen St. E.) just set down roots, it did.
If you haven’t been to the Imperial Pub (54 Dundas St. E.) lately, mark your calendar: You’ve got until November 15 to make your way to the historic watering hole one last time. The cause of the 81-year-old establishment’s closure? A major redevelopment project in the area.
Following new arrivals in the vicinity, a Junction stalwart is departing. Indie Alehouse (2876 Dundas St. W.) is closing doors as of October 11, but on the lookout for new digs. In the meantime, The Brewpub at Eataly’s Bay and Bloor shop (Manulife Centre, 55 Bloor St. W.) is in full effect.

Think of the lovely ‘71 Corsair Trailer on the patio of 222 Geary Ave. - currently dubbed BodegaGeary and filled with great people, food and drinks - as a convivial placeholder for the sweeping restaurant with bar to come.
