It was then that I realized how deeply and truly in love I was with September Jones. Not a crush, more than a desire. No, it was more than that—I loved her.
I loved her.

I can’t wait to be on a plane to Dublin. I’m imagining myself sitting in a little coffee shop, sipping on some tea, and writing my next novel.

My Bookshelf #2
Since I’ve given you books I have read, here’s a list of books I got recently and are on my bookshelf to read.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald: I know, I know, you’re screaming at your screen because I haven’t read this book. I’m getting around to it. Don’t worry.
Heartborn by Terry Maggert: This book isn’t published yet, but I’m getting a proof of it from the author in the next week or two to read and give feedback on. You should go find Terry and get one of his books; he writes some pretty amazing paranormal books.
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard: I’ve been eyeing this book since I first saw it on the shelves in Barnes & Noble. Hopefully it’s as good as it looks!
I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore: I know it’s a sci-fi book about aliens and that’s about it. The tag line is what convinced me to buy it. “Three are dead.”
Brida by Paulo Coelho: It’s a book about an Irish girl and the cover is beautiful. That’s all I know.
The Skin Map by Stephen R. Lawhead: I don’t know much about this book either, but it looks thrilling and the summary is interesting. We’ll see.
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: Apparently, I don’t know anything about the books I own. Whatever. I’ve heard this is an amazing book.
London Calling by Edward Bloor: This one I do know something about. It’s a historical fiction about a little British boy. Plot twist: he’s dead. He tries to communicate with the main character and show him parts of the past.
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: Another historical fiction about two best friends. As I understand it, at least one of them is a spy and is stranded in an enemy country during the war. Don’t quote me on that, though.
I have plenty more books to read, but these are on the top of my list right now. If you have any other books you’d like to recommend to me, please, let me know!
You can find my book on Amazon or at my website (kmhigginbotham.com). It’s a fantasy book called Keeper: The Book of Aon.
My Bookshelf
For those of you that are bookworms, here are a couple books I’ve read recently that I totally recommend.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak: A historical fiction novel about a bookworm of a girl growing up in Nazi Germany who befriends a German Jew. Fantastic book.
Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell: Another great novel. Teen fiction with some mature themes and elements, so take caution. It’s a realistic love story between two teenagers in high school with some complications.
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater: If you’re a werewolf kind of person, this is a good book to read. It has some interesting elements. It’s a love story (surprise, suprise) about a girl and the werewolf boy that saved her life when she was younger. It’s a book series, but I only made it through the first book this summer, so I can’t tell you much about the other books.
The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey: This is a dystopian/sci-fi novel about aliens and the end of the world. Another book series that I haven’t finished, but the first book was pretty good. The main character is a teenage girl who has lost both of her parents to the first four waves and can’t find her little brother. She fights against the fifth wave in her search for him.
Eve: The Awakening by Jenna Moreci: Outstanding sci-fi novel. It’s a thick book, but it’s worth every word to read it and it’s definitely one of my favorites. Eve is a chimera, an evolved superhuman that society hates. Her story takes place at a college, where she hopes to start fresh and hide her identity. Sadly, the campus is not nearly as safe as she thinks it is. With the help of Jason Valentine, a new chimera himself, she struggles to stay alive and keep other people safe.
Paper Towns by John Green: Honestly, not my favorite book ever, but I put it on here because it’s well written. The story (in my opinion) is a bit drawn out and the ending isn’t satisfying, but that may very well be the point of it. It’s reality based. People aren’t perfect. If that sounds like your kind of book, this is the one for you.
There you go. If you were looking for something to read, hopefully you found it. If none of these suit you, you can always go take a peek at my fantasy novel on Amazon and see if it tickles your fancy. It’s called Keeper: The Book of Aon. You can find out more about it on kmhigginbotham.com.

My book is finally published and available on Amazon!! Hooray!!!
For those of you who don’t know:
Keeper: The Book of Aon is the story of Elizabeth Knight, who finds a homeless boy with a peculiar book in the streets near her apartment. She invites him in to give him shelter from the rain and peeks at his book while he sleeps. The next morning, she wakes up in Aon with the boy, Edward, by her side.
She’s instantly thrown into dangerous situations involving the Night Rider, the kingdom’s known terrorist. The book that Edward carried is declared hers, and she’s given the title of Keeper. She learns that carrying this book is a dangerous task, for it controls the future of the kingdom that Edward is destined to rule.
Elizabeth is tasked with defeating the Night Rider and saving the kingdom, knowing that one mistake could send her spinning through the darkness, back to her real life and her lonesome home.
You can find Keeper: The Book of Aon in paperback and in eBook on Amazon! When you get your copy, make sure to send me a picture; I’d love to see!!

Stone Cold
*This is just something I came up with on the fly. Enjoy!*
My hands are cold. It’s nothing new; my hands are always cold, so I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am. Why?
Because they’re shaking, that’s why.
My hands don’t shake. I don’t shake. For some reason, however, standing in this dark, empty room, I see my hands start to twitch against my will, then full on vibrate against my leg. I hold them up in front of my face, examining them, as if I could find the source of the problem on the outside.
Something falls to the floor in the darkness, sending an echo around the room and blasting into my ears. I only have a second to process the first sound before another comes louder after it, and then footsteps after that.
“Cold, are we?” he asks, taking his time as his steps draw closer. “Have you been waiting long?”
“Where am I?” I ask, still unable to see farther than a few feet in front of me. “Why am I here?”
“You know why you’re here, Myra,” he says. The footsteps come to a halt, and all I can hear now is my breathing and his voice. “You have something I need.”
The footsteps pick up again, and as they draw ever closer, my hands shake more violently. With each step, I wonder if somehow he’s responsible.
I feel a hand on my shoulder. My hands stop shaking.
“Give it to me.”
“Give what to you?” I ask. “I don’t have anything you need.”
He lifts his hand again, and my hands resume trembling. “If that were true, your hands would be still. The two pieces cannot function separately, Myra, but together, they have unlimited power. I have one piece, and you, my dear, have the other: but you already knew that, didn’t you?”
“Why are my hands shaking?” I ask cautiously, my eyes wide as I feel the air move around me. “What are you doing to me?”
“I’m not doing anything. It’s that stone you wear around your neck that itches to be reunited with its other half that I wear on my wrist. They cannot resist one another.”
The stone seems to grow heavier on my chest as his hand runs from my shoulder to my neck, then to the other shoulder. It sends a chill down my spine.
“I’m going to give you one more chance, Myra. Hand over the stone.”
I swallow, forcing a painful gulp down my throat before shaking my head. “No.”
He chuckles, the rasp sending another wave of chills through my body. “I’m sorry, that’s not the answer I’m looking for.”
His footsteps move slowly, the sound painful and torturing as they circle me. I close my eyes, breathing deeply as I do my best to stay calm. I’m terrified– and I’m sure he knows it– but I won’t let my fear control me.
My breath hitches in my throat when I hear his breathing right in front of me. I can feel the change in the air; I can sense the closeness between us.
“Open your eyes, Myra,” he commands, his voice stone cold. “Face your fate.”
With shaking hands and gritted teeth, I slowly open my eyes.
