Except for watching the occasional baseball game with my family, I wasn’t into sports as a girl. Instead, it was music and folklore that interested me, and that I eventually went on to study. After grad school, I got a job at Folkways Records in Washington, DC. It was there that I first became interested in Métis music and culture.

Living in DC, I could hardly help becoming a fan of the Washington Capitals, our NHL team. As I read more and more about hockey, I noticed the absence of attention paid to female players and their experiences. Seeking out their stories, I began to craft my own, centered on Agnes Demers, a Métis hockey player in Saskatchewan.

Seeking the Center is my first novel.

I love that the conventional veils of self-preservation that we so often draw between each other are simply not there between the two of them - even when they'd like them to be. It makes for a certain rawness that I - a lover of expressionist painting and screeching, dissonant operas by Richard Strauss - can really appreciate. Also, their care for each other feeds their own more individual passions - or seems to, so far (I'm only halfway through the series) - so that their love for each other creates more space, more possibility for each of them, rather than less.(less)

That's easy: write. If you were an aspiring basketball player, you'd play basketball, right?
Another thing that comes to mind is something I actually stole from someone and I can't even remember who it was! But it is this: don't be afraid to be curious. If there's a subject that interests you - no matter how trivial or unworthy prevailing opinion makes it out to be - look into it. Deeply. Chances are there's a lot more to it than meets the eye, and let that be your inspiration.(less)

Women's hockey since 2016: progress meets precedent

I’ve been meaning to write a post for some time now. As we approach the 10-year anniversary of the publication of Seeking the Center, I’ve been thinking about how much progress has been made within women’s hockey. The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), founded less than three years ago, has expanded twice already and now has teams in 12 cities: Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Seattle
