Website.

So, I finally have a website!

To celebrate, I'm giving away some audiobooks over there. There's also a little deleted scene from AMA up.

I'll be moving all blogging to the website, and will also be sharing news, and writing that otherwise wouldn't be published - deleted scenes, what's happening now the book has ended scenes, even maybe some random writing.

Want all of my books as signed paperbacks?

A little off topic here, kind of. I'm sure you've seen the horror of the current Australian bushfire crisis and to help get some much needed funding to our (volunteer) rural firefighters there's an auction going on Twitter now under the hashtag #AuthorsForFireys.

I'm participating, as are a whole bunch of other authors. The winning bidder for my auction will receive a signed copy of each of my books to date. You can bid here:

What's up in EJ Booklandia?

Long time no blog.
I'd like to say it's because I've been gallivanting around the world having a marvellous time travelling, but actually it's more that nothing really has been happening in EJ Booklandia.

Coming up though! November is busssssy for my book things.

Turbulence audio, narrated by Abby Craden is due for release on November 2nd.

If the Shoe Fits will be out 15th November and is available for pre-order now from Amazon. Friends, this is one I'm so excited for people to read. I mean, I'm always excited but now I'm REALLY excited. Jana is such a fun character and being able to tie up Sabine and Rebecca's story too is fantastic.
AND! If the Shoe Fits will be on audio...sometime? I'm honestly not sure when exactly but keep your ears peeled :) Jana's adventures into lady love will be narrated by Kelsey Navarro, and I'm quite very sure audio listeners will love it.

In the meantime I'm still working on Reaping the Benefits which is fun but ooooh boy, the third person was really kicking my butt. Now it's just gently poking at me now and then :)

Alone chat - SPOILERS!

Something that inevitably comes up when I’m talking to people about my work is my love of using first person. I am an unashamed Firstie. But first person can be a divisive beast. First person present tense? Well… I may as well have just told you I hate kittens and puppies (Of course I don’t – I’m not a monster!).

When asked about my obsession with first person writing, I always answer with some variation of how first person PoV feels incredibly immersive for me, like I’m actually inside the character’s head. I like that, I like those deep thoughts, getting to experience what the character is, though it can be incredibly difficult when the character is having a rough time – I’m looking at you, Sabine in Ask Me Again and also you, Celeste in Alone.

Speaking of Alone, I’ve had a few people approach me as they’ve been reading with their thoughts and theories, so I thought I’d try to explain a few things and what I hoped to accomplish. I've tried all kinds of magic, but it seems I can't use spoiler tags for blog posts. If you haven’t read Alone then keep reading at your own peril. I take no responsibility for spoiled things!

THIS
IS
SPOILER
SPACING
AND
IS
PROBABLY
COMPLETELY
POINTLESS
BUT

KEY
:)

Alone was really the perfect vessel for a first person present tense novel. The present tense was natural and immediately comfortable for someone like Celeste who is just living moment to moment by herself. It gives you tedium, it gives you her immediate sense of her experience, it forces you to be involved. Double thumbs up. The first person sticks you right inside the mind of someone living in an interesting scenario. Double thumbs and double toes up.

If you read the blurb, then I think it’s rather obvious that Olivia is part of the whole thing from the start. Even if you don’t, I’m pretty sure it’s clear she’s involved somehow. Some people are picking up on who she is, others just that she’s in on it. Come closer...closer…no, that’s too close, you’re standing on my foot.

I wanted that.

I wanted you, the reader to experience the book and the whole while know something was coming. Know that Olivia wasn’t quite who she said she was. And I wanted you to be stuck inside someone’s head who had NO idea what was going on, until she knew. Because how good is that? Well not good, but you know, good. Honestly, I’m feeling a little bit smug about it. Okay okay, it’s a bit manipulative Clockwork Orange of me to force readers to be rushing towards a train wreck inside an oblivious bystander’s head, but at the same time – I’m not sorry.

But, pals, I admit, it was hard to write. Not in the sense of getting words onto a page but to have someone like Celeste and put her through that. To be in the head of someone who doesn’t know, but I knew everything that was happening. Talk about a head trip.
I’ve also spotted some really interesting things about the deeper psychological nature of the whole thing, which has been awesome to read. You guys are so clever.

One of the trickiest things for me with this book was Olivia’s genuine love for Celeste. Because as Celeste said (and I’m paraphrasing here) ‘If you loved me, how could you do that?’ Fair point. Poor Olivia, she really was wedged firm between rock and hard place. A bigger/longer explanation of Olivia’s reasoning and feelings was something I would have loved to delve into further to really push it home that she did the best she could with the cards she’d been dealt. And yes, it’s a legit deep lurve and connection.
But pace and flow and all that. And being a first person novel, well here you have one of its limitations. So I did the best I could and hoped with everything that people saw that Olivia was genuine, though her method was perhaps not the best it was all she could do when forced by their shared circumstances.

Ugh, I could ramble for hours about this. But I’m at work and supposed to be doing actual job things, but I just had to blurt this out.

Guys, I love this novel. But like I’ve been saying – it’s a bit weird. But good weird…

Books, burnout, beer and boobs. Okay, maybe not the last two but I wanted to alliterate.

Well, here we are again together. You and me, friends, one month-ish out from another release. Side note – super gratified and excited by the positive comments to Alone already. If you've been hanging around, you'd know that I’ve been blathering for ages about how this one is "different". And, as is always the case with books, some will like it and some will not. But this is one I really want people to enjoy (oh hi, Ego, wondered where you’d gotten to).

I think what I’m most excited about is for people to read Alone and then come chat with me about it. No, seriously – I would love to discuss it with you! I feel like I’ve been so evasive and secretive about it that I’m just desperate to talk about this book. So, please, hit me up here or on Twitter or wherever and I’ll probably talk your ear (or eyes?) off.

Alone is already available on your Amazons etc for paperback pre-order and as usual, the Bella site will have all your formats, paper and electronic ready about two weeks before release on 15th May.

I’ve been incredibly busy since...well...forever, but more so in the past eight months or so. You may or may not know but writing is technically just a hobby I squeeze in around a full time job and other life stuff. Ask Me Again and Alone were both incredibly emotionally draining novels, and with two books out every year for three years in a row, honestly I’m a little tired after a nonstop write/edit/write while editing/marketing/being anxious cycle.

And all of this is relevant why, E. J.? Well…I’m just finishing up final edits for my November release, If the Shoe Fits which is what I'd call a soft, easy romance. For my own sanity, after the previous intense novels, I REALLY needed this one to be an easy, light, girl meets girl and realises she’s not so straight after all, gentle, not angsty type story. I adore it. Jana Fleischer is incredibly fun (though she took some wrangling). And Sabine and Rebecca are very much involved, continuing their story in the background because I really wanted to give everyone who’s expressed love for those two a really full on happy ending. I’ll admit it, I cried writing certain loved-up scenes.

Then I’m not sure what the plan for 2020 is. Again, full honest disclosure – once I sent If the Shoe Fits to the publisher, I was hit with an unexpected, and unpleasant, sensation of what I can only describe as a micro-burnout. See reasons above. I opened up my completed first draft of my historical fiction, Lena and was struck by how boring and unimaginative the words felt (which was really distressing given this book is the book of my heart and previously I’d thought it was the bees knees). I opened up my unnamed Post-Apoc and couldn’t get over how tedious everything was and how much I just did not want to be writing it.

Those things were a clear sign it was time to take a break from writing. So I did. Guys – I WATCHED NETFLIX! Don’t laugh, we’re total Netflix newbies because Australia’s internet is third world and we only recently had an internet plan made available that gave us the data allowance to use Netflix (I’m not even kidding). Top tip – if you’re considering moving to Australia – stick to the cities, not the rural areas where 30GB/month allowance at 2Mb/s for a ridiculous price is a fucking LUXURY.

Anyways, I Netflixed, I bummed around, I played some CoD and Prey and Wolfenstein. And then...I just felt like writing again. Literally just a few days of no pressure and the switch was turned back on.

So. I’m currently working on something I call both Death's Minion and L’amour et La Mort (PLEASE do laugh at my awful Google Translate French :D). I really don’t know what I’m actually going to call it. It’s also...hold onto your hats... THIRD PERSON all the way through. I know, I’m still in shock myself. I love this one—and so does my BFF who’s been niggling me to write it ever since I mentioned the vague idea to her years ago. It’s funny, it’s original (I think) and all around very good fun. A VERY basic premise is: Death’s Head Minion (Morgan) has to team up with one of her human employees (Jane) in order to tick items off Jane’s bucket list so Morgan can win Employee of the Year again. Shenanigans, fun, little bit of drama and a lot of falling in love ensues.
I promise that when I have details about its release, you’ll know too.

Hope to catch you all on the other side of Alone's release!
