Joy Norstrom is a Canadian writer and social worker residing in Treaty 7 territory. She enjoys sharing stories about the human experience, exploring the outdoors with her family, and reading late into the night when she should be asleep.

Her books will be devoured by readers who enjoy quirky characters and insightful stories on relevant issues.

Whether Joy is meeting with friends, advocating for social justice, or debating mascara brands with her teenagers, she can generally be found in conversation. Why? She believes human connection and laughter keep her grounded in a muddled world.

I always imagine myself outdoors with a cider at my side and a book in my hand. Such a false image as I'm usually chased back indoors by wasps, the heat, or the glare off my screen or page.

In truth, this summer you can likely find me curled up in bed or on the couch. The cider will likely be Bengal Spice tea or maybe a nice Malbec, and that's okay because I'm sure to be enjoying a fab book or two. My reading plans this summer include:

1. Room by Emma Donoghue. I had a chance to hear Emma speak at a WordFest event in Calgary this spring. She was amazingly funny and awesome and I've heard nothing but good things about Room, so can't wait.

2. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. 'Ove' has been on my To Read list for a long time, but I've now made the commitment as my partner in the Sweeter Reads Goodreads Bookclub has suggested it to me. Again, can't wait to read this story which has been super loved by so many.

3. The Broken Ones by Danielle L. Jensen. Now come on, who doesn't want to read this prequel? It's being released tomorrow, on my birthday (oh ya, it's a big one that starts with a four and ends with a giant goose egg) and I can't wait to immerse myself back in the world of Trollus.

And how about you? What do you plan to read this summer and please do confess: are you an innie or an outie when it comes to reading? I promise not to judge as long as you don't :). (less)

Introducing Anushka Shenoy, the Illustrator of Marjorie Magic

Picture If you've been following my posts on social media, you'll know I've got an exciting event coming up: next month. My first picture book, Marjorie Magic will be published by Dixi Books. One thing that made this experience so different from publishing adult fiction, was the fabulous opportunity to work with an illustrator.

For my manuscript the publisher selected Anushka Shenoy as the il Read more of this blog post »

“There is always hope... Life can surprise us sometimes.”
Joy Norstrom, Out Of Play

“Life isn't fair. That's the truth of it. Not everyone gets a fair shake. Things happen. Miserable things happen. The don't always make sense. So you've got to go for it while you have a chance. Make your life what you want it to be. Cause we just never know how long we have.”
Joy Norstrom

“Live was over before you knew it. It was time to grab life by the proverbial balls and shake the shit out of it.”
Joy Norstrom, Out Of Play

“Your children are not your children.
They are sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For thir souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the make upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness.
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He also loves the bow that is stable.”
Kahlil Gibran
