I saw Michael Parkinson's very patronising interview with Meg Ryan, asking - more or less - "What's a nice girl like you doing in a film like this?" and was intrigued. I watched the film and then went on to read the novel by Susanna Moore. I was interested to see if I could write something similar set in the UK. The Meg Ryan character is a teacher/poet and my character, Kate, is a textile artist.

Although this was the inspiration, my novel took on a life of its own and the story is very different. But it is an erotic thriller, and there is a question of revenge and survival at the heart of it. (less)

A new obsession...

I am still (very slowly) recovering from this major lupus flare up - but the good news is that Ryan is pretty much completely recovered from his surgery! I am extremely proud of him because after a lifetime of smoking (he started at fourteen) and then vaping (back in 2016) he gave up vaping six weeks before the surgery - after reluctantly listening to advice from the registrar - and he hasn’t been

“Last night, I killed a man. If I had to, I'd do it all over again. Afterwards I slept like a baby. There's a surprising amount of physical exertion in murder - they don't call it a dead weight for nothing.”
A.E. Rawson, A Savage Art

“I wanted an impressionistic effect, so I highlighted down her arms and the back of one hand. The other I left curled on one side and picked out her shoulders and collar bone. Then down to her navel, which I also highlighted in gold.
Then I took a small paintbrush and hovered above her nipples.
'Gold, or pink?'
'Oh, definitely gold,' she said.
I painted her nipples and areola, and she giggled.
'Interesting,' she said, lifting her head and looking down.”
A.E. Rawson, A Savage Art

“It was the men I was really concerned about so I worked through the male avatars more systematically. Several had clearly been pursuing her - but that in itself was no surprise. She'd given the majority a polite brush off. One or two had offered her their protection, whatever that meant. I took a note of the interesting ones, logged out of Rowena's account and back in under my login of Cassandra. All but one were open to new contacts, so I composed and sent flirtatious introductions.”
A.E. Rawson, A Savage Art

“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”
Mark Twain

“When I used to teach creative writing, I would tell the students to make their characters want something right away - even if it's only a glass of water. Characters paralyzed by the meaninglessness of modern life still have to drink water from time to time.”
Kurt Vonnegut

“You need to read more science fiction. Nobody who reads science fiction comes out with this crap about the end of history”
Iain Banks

“Fuck every cause that ends in murder and children crying.”
Iain M. Banks, Against a Dark Background

“The point is, there is no feasible excuse for what are, for what we have made of ourselves. We have chosen to put profits before people, money before morality, dividends before decency, fanaticism before fairness, and our own trivial comforts before the unspeakable agonies of others”
Iain M. Banks, Complicity
