I was incredibly impressed with the dedicated volunteers, mostly women, who were brilliantly and passionately raising the money to make these miracles happen. As I tripped across more Carnegie libraries, I came across snippets of historical notes and started imagining the women who enticed Andrew Carnegie to invest in their communities in the early 1900s.
My interest in Carnegie libraries probably dates back to about age 3, since my hometown library in Manhattan, Kansas was a classic Carnegie. My, I loved that place! My candy store!(less)

Inspiration

When asked about the inspiration for my novel, I answer simply: “I love libraries.” Libraries of all shapes and sizes; new libraries and old libraries; libraries here, there, and everywhere. That said, the vintage, small-town, Midwestern Carnegie libraries hold a special place in my heart, probably because my very first library, in Manhattan, Kansas, was a Carnegie.
